Alfred Gregory, born 1846.

proper brummie kid
Alfred Gregory my Great Grandfather, born Birmingham 1846, appears in the 1881 census living in Grt.Western Terrace with his wife and family. Looking at the 1871 census his wife, Mary (Bennett) is living with her parents with two of their children with no sign of Alfred. Mary is listed as “wife of jeweller”. My question is where is Alfred in 1871? Was he away visiting, if so should he not appear somewhere on the census. Was he abroad? Had he been enlisted in the forces? Was he in prison? Can someone advise me where to look to further my research? Thanks in advance.

Well done, a question asked and a solution within minutes. I take my hat off too you both, Louisa and Chris. Chris, I've found the page you refer to in the 1871 census, but it appears a very poor copy. Can I obtain a better copy elsewhere?
Thanks again
Tony

Would this be your Alfred as a boy on the 1851 census?

In the 1871

William Misson age 60 born Warwickshire
Mary A Misson age 42 wife born Middlesex
William J Misson age 3 son Born Middlesex
Alfred Gregory age 24 born Warwickshire

RG10/380/43
Queen street Clerkenwell London

This ties in with the birth place of two of Alfreds children so it is likely that the Misson family may be relatives.

Hope it helps
Louisa
