Adoption Records

Hughes

master brummie
Is it possible to look up adoption records.
I have a aunt who is on the 1911 census as living with my grand parents William and Miriam
Hughes in Grove Rd Kings Heath. Her name then was Dora Florence Evens aged 14 born
Mallebourn,London( could this be Marylebone) she was said to be a servant.Going forward to 1930
Electoral Roll she is named as Vera Florence Hughes. When she married in 1934 she used
Vera Florence Evans, giving her age as 27 which would give a birth date as 1907.Yet the 1911
census gives a birth of 1897.Was she telling a porky at her wedding?
Regards
John Hughes

She is down as a nurseling but the enumerator changed it to servant (the writing is in a different hand) and it could be Vera, I am not sure about the capital letter of the first name, trying to find another entry starting with capital V or D

the age is wrong in the 1911 census
Vera Florence Evans Year of Registration: 1907 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: St Marylebone (1902-1977) County: Greater London, London Volume: 1a Page: 546

Looking at the original her name could be read as Vera,it's just not clear handwriting."Servant" was written over what appears to say "nurseling"

Yes I think you have cracked it between you.I had clocked the birth in Marylebone in 1907.The age on the 1911 should have been 4yrs
That fits in with the Nurseling instead of servant. So the age on the wedding cert of 27 is correct and my Aunt was not a fibber.
Thanks all

Why would her fathers name be Percy Hill?
There is a Vera Florence Hill born Mar 1906 Hackney or could she have been born Hill and married a Mr Evans.
Does it say she is a spinster.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that good old Percy did the dirty on Vera's mother, had his wicked way then did not wed the
poor lass.What do you think.

I have obtained the Birth Cert for Vera Florence Evans. She was born in Queencharlottes Hospital,Marylebone Rd.19th March 1907
Mother Florence Evens aged 18.a General Servant, living in Barnes. She may well have been only 17 when Percy Hill put her in the club.
No wonder she could not keep the child.
How she came to live with my Grandmother in Brum is a mystery.
As a matter of interest could you look at the 1911 census, there is a Florence Evans aged 22 living in Holborn London.
Was she a servant and where was she born?
Cheers
John Hughes

Hi John, the Florence in Holborn was married to a Thomas and had 2 young children. She had been married for 3 years.

There is a Florence Evans aged 23 who is a cook to the Sadler family in Kensington.Census states she was born in Pershore,Worcestershire.
Another Florence Evans aged 23 who is a General Domestic Servant, born Essex, working for the Gilby family in Forest Gate,Essex.
looking at the 1901 and Pershore, there are 2 Florences in the age range, one aged 13 whose mother is a widow, and another aged 12,with 5 siblings, whose father is a labourer in a market garden.

Thanks Ladybird, the Florence working for the Sadler family sounds promising. My grandfather comes from Westmancote not a million miles
from Pershore.Perhaps there is a tie up there.
Bye
John Hughes
