18th century recipe

loisand

master brummie
Took from the National Archives, I think us BARwomen will like this:

Recipe for making SHRUB, (please don't ask what it means, just looks good)

9 PINTS of brandy
2 pints of lemon juice

Result: Must be diluted in use to make punch

Sound good just by itself :o ::) :P

Sounds good to me and just to show my erudition ( OK I looked it up ) ::)

Shrub is a term for any drink made from fruit juices with or without alcohol and it's a corruption of Sherbert. PASS THE CORKSCREW!

Yipeeeeeeee............

Americans use the word sherbert, when the've been on the beer, lovely old word Jerry.

Another old Englsih recipe, which I can tell you is to die for - Sylabub. White wine with whpped cream.

Vistied Clovelly in l977 with my husband and went for a drink in the New Inns pub during the evening. There were several Americans drinking in the bar that night and people were suggesting that they tried the local Shrub. I had never heard of it but a friend of ours who lived in Fowey had told us a bit about it...so our ears pricked up when we heard the word mentioned. We had been told it is "dynamite". Sadly, I have never had any but hey....with this recipe who knows!
