Yes, there appears to be gardens front and back, I was confused as to the reason for the 'alleys' between some of the properties because I thought they would just have a back door to each house but looking at the 1889 map the 'alleys' were to gain access to other properties at the back...

I can't help about your grandad's working life but have attached an aerial view of their house (poor quality unfortunately).

It looks as though Park Works (Henry Shaw & Sons)originally went up to the corner of Bradford Street/Birchall Street. Doesn't look as though any of it was retained to me. EDIT: Park works did not extend to the corner as this aerial view from 1921 shows

Between 1879 and 1883 the properties in Sherlock Street were renumbered, No. 242 became No. 92. It appears that the court behind No. 92 may have been detroyed in a WWII air-raid.

Hi Harry, sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I've tried a reverse image search on google but it doesn't give any matches. The only hope is that the original poster on BHF can scan the image at a better resolution.

There are 3 shops and then an entry to the court behind, No. 56 is the shop just before this entry. No. 58 (or possibly 59) is set back from the frontage, I couldn't find a similar arrangement on the rest of the street. On the left of the first shop there appears to be some sort of access to No...

Some google views from 2026 (aerial) and RSA in 1924 (formerly Pearsons shopfitters where my dad worked for most of his life). Frontage of Crocodile Works (and possibly more) has been retained and looks to be a very prestigious area.

I'm fairly certain that this photo shows the front of No. 56.
