Lichfield Road Aston

I see it now, Stars gives a date of 1921, the Birmingham Archives and Collections gives 3 years later in 1924.

It has appeared on this thread before (Post 55 by Stars) together with a later view dated 1930. I believe the photos were taken from the junction of Lichfield Rd and Aston Hall Rd near the King Edward pub looking towards Salford Bridge.
Thank you for that point of reference, it is much appreciated!

Yes, I think its looking towards Salford Bridge during the road improvement scheme. The remnants of the Birmingham Corporation Waterworks Department filter beds are on the left as is in the distance ethe old Aston Wells Pumping Station. The filter bed were made redundant by the Elan Valley scheme but I have a feel that Aston Wells Pumping Station continued to operate, the building was still there until they built the motorway

not sure if this is a new one

Know that part of the road very well. My aunt had a greengrocer and fishmonger shop on the left about 5 or 6 stores from the rail bridge and on the corner of (can’t remember). Next to them toward the bridge was a newspaper shop, a barber shop then a butcher shop. I used to work at the greengrocers after school and on Saturday.

Richard, was the greengrocer's shop you mention called Sparrows? If you look at my post 301 in this thread, I identify each of the shops between the Station and Grosvenor Road in the mid 1960s. My grandfather owned the newsagent at number 268-270. The attached photo, which has been on this site before, shows the row of shops in 1958.

Oh my goodness, yes! Richard and Florence Sparrow. I used to go to the newsagents to pick up cigarettes for my uncle (underage). The butcher’s shop that Don is referring to is a couple of doors down on the right. I will look at post 301, thank you!
In the meantime from this post you have identified Grosvenor Rd, which I could not recall. I was born at my nans, 16 Alfred street then my parents moved to Grosvenor Rd which was promptly bombed.

Brasscaster, I did look at post 301, great post by the way. The butchers name Whithouse was actually not the owners name, if I recall it was Sid somebody. Looking at your post I remembered that the name on the building did not match. Nevertheless I am going to relook the entire thread on Litchfield Rd, unfortunately I do not know of anyone who might know the owner, but thank you have just made this thread much more exciting and a great start of my day in Tennessee!
