Those two phots in #26 are of interest to me too Lyn. My dad worked as a carpenter for Birmingham City Housing Department and was based at James St Depot. He often told me of a small maintenance yard the council workmen would pop into for a cup of tea and to use the workbench to do small joinery jobs. It was located on the corner of Nursery Road, but I don’t know which one.

He said it was behind some advertising hoardings adjacent to the gable end of a row of terraced houses. There was a hut with a small workbench, and it had a fireplace, maybe a stove that the workers used for some heat and to make tea.

All Birmingham City Housing Department yards had a number, so they referred to this one as Depot X.

He said that the local houses were built by the Barber Trust originally and were given to Birmingham City Housing Department at some stage. The small Depot was the original Barber Trust maintenance yard.

Hello Lyn,

We lived at 48 NURSERY road, it was two doors before the salvation army from church street.right opposite George Wright. The photograph shows the daughter of mr and mrs Rollason, going towards the salvation army was mr and mrs beech, then my Aunt Betty and Frank Mercer, then us the Glovers , and finally before THE Sally anne was the Hoopers.

Interesting photos, Lyn. I recognise one or two that have appeared on BHF but they were worth seeing again. Pity there wasn't any No. 8 buses. :D

Thanks for these photos Lyn. A reminder of my journey to school down Church St. and across to Wellesley St. The number 8 bus stop when going to Small Heath, visiting Nan and Granpa, and many other memories of the area. Fantastic.

I was bemused to see the poster advertising GEC vacancies in photo no. 2. Little did I realise back then that I would end up there after school.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE FANTASTIC , THE ONE WITH THE LITTLE GIRL IS OUTSIDE BANDAGE IRONMONGERY, USED TO BE OWNED BY MRS PERNELL , SHE MOVED UP CHURCH STREET FOLLOWING THE BOMBING FROM JUST AFTER THE BACK ALLEYWAY. TO NUMBERS 46 TO 54
THINK THE BOMB TOOK 4 TO 6 HOUSES , BUT IT MADE A GREAT PLAYGROUND FOR YEARS AFTER THE WAR . MIKE48

Thank you for those photos Lyn, particularly the last one as I attended the Salvation Army 1957- 1958 before going into the Training College. So many lovely memories of the area and people. As a matter of interest can anyone give me information of the Church shown in a number of the photos please
