I was having a discussion with my mother in law about my father in laws time in the army. Denis Downing was a soldier when they met in 1943/44. I am assuming he served in the 2nd world war but i do know he served in Korean war . My mother in law has dementia so she cant remember much. Somethings come back clearly but other things are quite muddled. My Father in law was from the Smethwick area would there be a chance that he was with the Royal Staffordshire regiment. How could i find this out . ? When addressing the envelopes my mother in law would put the letters REME. what do they mean.. I would like to obtain some information regarding his time in service. My husband seems to think that his father was always away when he was a youngster so he must have been a 10/15 year soldier at least... Please help
