The Woodman

Let's hope they do it would be a crime to destroy it but it will have to be viable to survive , the new park should help though

Would I be wrong in thinking there's irony in the fact that their main customers could well come from the HS 2 development? The development of a square to include Curzon Street Station etc sounds like it has great possibilities. Viv.

These are really old photos of the Woodman. The inside and the outside are in a terrible state. I've got high hopes for the place though with Nigel who runs the Wellington and the Post Office Vaults taking over the pub.

Nothing but happy memories from The Woodman, I used to frequent the establishment in the 1980's when it was run by a lovely couple Mr & Mrs J Gilnagh (apologies if I've spelt the surname incorrectly). Spent my 21st birthday with work colleagues in the back room drinking merrily. Lovely to see the photo's on the heritage site.
Rob.

It was my favourite pub when it was run by Jim and Mary Gilnagh and he kept the best pint of Tetleys bitter you could get anywhere and he was a non-drinker.I used to work at Sankeys next door to the pub and it was always my first port of call on my way home.

Here's a recent photo of mine of The Woodman within Eastside City Park

Also on the day that Eastside City Park was officially opened last month

I did see it earlier in the week when I went to Thinktank. Looks in the same condition externally.

i know what Jim's secret was to the best pint of tetleys!
2 pints of Guinness in every barrel,

him and my dad were mates,
i had the unenviable job of cleaning the tiles every 3 months with sugar soap when i was about 14-15(late 80's)

Was heading back to work at lunchtime after popping into the new Spar at Masshouse, when I noticed The Woodman has reopened.
New pub signs resemble a man playing golf!

It was raining.

The park full of students from BCU, BOA and Birmingham Metropolitan College (I would assume).

Is it being aimed at students? (being that BOA, BCU, Aston and the Metropolitan College are all nearby)

Looks nice inside.

That what I asked the Manager and the answer was " definitely not, if the students want to come in, no problem but it's a real ale pub aimed at real ale drinkers"

During the mid seventies I worked at the British Rail parcel depot behind the old Curzon St station. We spent a fair bit of time in the Woodman especially in the winter months during the evenings when trains were often delayed. Thought nothing of having four or five pints and then going back and unloading a parcel train.

just caught up with this thread..smashing pics froth...great to see a pub being reopened...
