Which side of the road was that on, the odd-numbered side or the even? We used to play marbles on the square in front of the maisonettes, the only bit of grass around. When we played on the low wall by the street we would get the inevitable, "Go play down your own end." Fond memories.I lived at number 11, Reginald Road in the maisonettes.

Hi Wendy. Good to hear from you. I remember those days well, especially since I started writing my memoirs for my grandchildren. I never moved to Somerset with Andrea and my parents, but stayed in the Birmingham area for my job as a teacher. I tried to get a teaching post down there, but no luck so stayed here. I was writing about the day Graham took me to Marsh Hill for the first time when I was 11. He was a bit miffed that he couldn't cycle to school as he wanted, so it was kind of him to be there for me for the first few weeks. I only have a few photographs of that time as Andrea has most of them and she hasn't spoken to me for a few years, so I'm making the most of the ones I have. One I do have is a nice one of the Mansells, Nan, Bert (auntie and uncle as we called them) and Roger, on holiday with us one time at Dovercourt Bay.Hi Phil,
I remember you well and your sister Andrea as we lived at 38. Wendy Howkins and brother Graham. Are you still in Somerset? Those pictures of Reginald Road were great with no cars at all. Its not like that now.
We used to play with some children from the flats when we went down there. I seem to remember going round the back of the flats to the right to play. Those were on the even-numbered side of the road. I remember the Maguire names although I couldn't put a face to them after this time. I went to school with a lad from the house next to the flats for a while. I think his dad sold cars. I know he took us to school in his car one day and I felt like royalty, as my dad didn't have a car until years later.Hi. Wendy and Phil. My cousins used to live in the maisonettes in the 50,s and 60,s Brian and Janet Nokes. they were on the ground floor and above them were twin boys. Did you know Danny Maguire and Terry i think his O'conner both lived in the maisonettes.
I can remember Janet Noakes and Danny Maguire but cant remember their faces! My friend Pamela Newbould lived in the first flats coming up the road from The Rock.Hi. Wendy and Phil. Hi, Danny Maguire lived at number 30, not in the maisonettes, great soccer player with the looks of George Best to go with his skill. We used to play with some children from the flats when we went down there. Hi Graham. Yes, Harry Rose. I think his car was pretty flashy. Do you remember the lad's name that I used to go to school with? I remember being in his front room with him telling ghost stories of spirits coming out of the wall to grab you. I didn't lean against a wall for years afterwards; well, I was quite young and very gullible.Hi, Danny Maguire lived at number 30, not in the maisonettes, great soccer player with the looks of George Best to go with his skill.
The only Terry I remember was Terry Chatterley who lived at number 8, ginger haired lad referred to as Chat. Next door at number 10 was the Parties, Donald and Tony.
Car salesman was probably Harry Rose at number 28, owed a garage in Washwood Heath. Later moved on and became a councilor.
Hi Phil, where did this lad live, that you went to school with.Hi Graham. Yes, Harry Rose. I think his car was pretty flashy. Do you remember the lad's name that I used to go to school with? Harry Rose's son. He was the same age as me and we went to Nansen Road PrimaryHi Phil, where did this lad live, that you went to school with.
Marsh hill or Nansen?
Do you follow the Marsh Hill Boys strand here?Hi Phil, where did this lad live, that you went to school with.
Marsh hill or Nansen?
Ok then that was Harry jnr.Do you follow the Marsh Hill Boys strand here?
I thought it funny that I recognised the name Harry. Makes sense now. Thanks for your help. It's good to get in touch and share memories like this. I lost touch with a lot of people when mom and dad went to Somerset. They went when I was living in Argentina, so when I got back my wife and I settled in the Harborne area and started over.Ok then that was Harry jnr.
The Roses moved to run Perry Common post office, then moved to Sutton where Harry snr became a councillor.
Not yet looked at Marsh Hill
So funny how coincidence occurs, I have recently formed a small group of gkn ex apprentices, from the mid 60s and strangely enough your dad's name cropped up as one of my ex apprentice pals worked with him at Birwelco......small world.I thought it funny that I recognised the name Harry. Harry Rose and Gwen his wife were friends of our parents and we used to go on holiday with them sometimes - I have a photo of us all in Ramsgate. We all packed into a large old ambulance that Harry bought to make the journey. Mom used to look after Harry Rose junior as both Harry Snr. and Gwen were busy at the garage in Washwood Heath Road. He also had an Austin Sherline. I dont know if thats how you spell it but it was a big posh car that we sometimes went out in. They sold the garage and bought a post office in Perry Barr.Hi Graham. I moved to Coventry after my first marriage broke up in the 80s and had a successful life working at Jaguar.

Wish I could remember Danny Maguire - he would have lived next door to Harry Rose. But cant remember that.
Dad got another job after Birwelco moved to Halesowen and the Aston factory closed, but then that place closed too. Andrea's husband, David Brookes, worked at the Jag but left after some argument or other. Which meant they were both out of work at the same time, so they sold up and bought a shop in Somerset together, big enough for them all to live in and run together. They did this while I was living abroad so I wasn't part of the move. I remember the main GKN building from when I was very young and they had Christmas Parities there for children of employees. So funny how coincidence occurs, I have recently formed a small group of gkn ex apprentices, from the mid 60s and strangely enough your dad's name cropped up as one of my ex apprentice pals worked with him at Birwelco......small world.

Does Roger have an email? I'd like to say hello to him after all these years. His mom was in our house every day for a cup of tea and a chat, so we were close as families. The last time I saw his mother was many years after my parents left Birmingham, and she was invited to my Aunt and Uncle's anniversary do. I gave her a lift home and we had a nice chat in the car. This is a nice photo of us on holiday together At Dovercourt Bay in the good old 'Hi Di Hi' days.Hi again Phil,
I am still in touch with Roger Mansell just at christmas mainly. He married later in life and had no children. His mom lived in Reginald Road till she died.
Also the two brothers in the flats were Tony and Donald Lattie. I think their father was Italian.
Phil, You cant really post anyones email on here as everyone can see it. But if you contact me privately we cant talk.Does Roger have an email? I'd like to say hello to him after all these years.
