Query building....from Bull Ring..

i know i should know but whats the street running down dennis...it just does not look familiar to me...lost me bearings

lyn

Bull Ring probably from the spire of St Martin's church, you can see Nelson, the Market Hall on the left after Phillips St, Central Hotel on the corner of Moor St and in the centre just about make out the corner of New St and High St.

It's difficult to judge the distance. Something to do with the Midland Hotel or is it further by the Old Square, Grand Theatre. In other words no idea.

A bit closer than I thought but could it be this building (towards the left) on High St? Seventh picture down - High St from Carrs Lane...

Or could it be the Evening Despatch building in Corporation Street..?

In the first photo the building doesn't appear to be as prominent as it should be in comparison to its surroundings, though it does on some of the others. Also, even though the photos are taken much closer it doesn't look that much bigger compared to the original but it's difficult to be sure.

Well, I agree....but going back to the more likely suspect in old High Street....does anybody know what that Tower building was???

I wondered if it was something to do with the Midland Arcade, but not sure of the position in the photo. Viv.

Looking at the maps no.70 High St appears to be on the corner of Union St and no. 90 is on the other side of New St. So somewhere in the 80s (numbers are sequential).

In 1891 no. 80 is listed as the High St Post Office and 81 is grandly listed as The Louvre, though it is occupied by a number of draper's assistants. Not sure if they are far enough down.

And it appears to have been mentioned previously on this Co-op thread...

Would it be above the entrance to the Midland Arcade?
Almost on topic, but memories triggered etc. When I was pushchair age, Mum and Dad used to take me through the Midland Arcade. I was told that I used to make short sharp AHH sounds as we went through, apparently I was fascinated by the echo in there.
OK, sorry, back to lurking the thread.

Andrew.

I thought that too Mike. I found this on the City & Midland Arcade thread which shows a sign within Midland Arcade for “Grand Louvre” except you can only see “Louvre” from the sign. It seems to be on the balcony above #44 and above the ground floor units. Grand Louvre Buildings housed several businesses (according to post #15) and from memory I think the Co-op owned or leased premises in the arcade for a while. The Grand Louvre address was 79 - 82 High Street.

I feel somehow the tower in the advert post #14 must be connected with the Arcade. If only we could find a full on photo/image of the High Street entrance to Midland Arcade. All images seem to be side on and often obliterate the tower from view.

Viv.

Looking at oldMohawk's aerial view you can see an arched arcade (?) to the left, perpendicular to the long back portion of the Louvre building. So, would the photo be looking from this join down the arcade opening on to New St, Grand Louvre and High St to the left?

Can anyone find a number for the (City and ) Midland Arcade on High Street please ? Does it match up with the Grand Louvre at 79-82 High Street ? Viv

A map highlighting the arcades for those interested. Viv.

Thanks Mike so that sorts that out. The “Louvre” sign in postcard #14 must have been either an entrance to the GL from the Midland Arcade or advertising then. Viv.

The aerial views dated 1937 and 1938 show the position of the arcade and the Grand Louvre tower.
