Programme on T.V tonight about Birmingham - Barging round Britain with John Sergeant.

Cadbury's, Bournville , plus canals. ITV at 8pm

Wonderful but sad, to hear john Sargeant talking of the Birmingham of yesteryear , once the workshop of the world.

A couple of days ago I heard Brum described, on the BBC, as "England's Second City".
As far as I'm aware it's still the second biggest city in Britain, despite Westminster's obsession with "The Northern Powerhouse" and Manchester.

Its a shame that the local football teams are unable to follow the trend of "Britain's Second City".

Enjoyed this episode. The view of Birmingham from the canal routes looks amazing. Despite lots of new development, there's a mix of old and new that really works! Taken a few screen shots from the programme of old images. Viv.

Firstly Bournville and Cadbury's

I think the Cadbury pictures are of the milk and crumb factory at Frampton or Knighton. The first could be Waterside (Bournville), but I don't think the other two are, and i think I have seen them all labelled as Frampton (but haven't yet found any copy i made of them)

Yes that's probably right Mike. I remember now there was a discussion on BHF about it. But can't seem to find the thread. Viv.

I think you're right about the first two Cadbury photos being the Knighton factory Mike. Here's the clip which was posted on the Cadbury Bournville thread (called "Cadbury's Bourneville"). The structures look the same. Not sure about the third photo though. Viv.

Thanks Mike. During the programme these two images were flashed up following the Lilley premises photo. I presume they're of Lilley's interior. Viv.

At the back of the old Typhoo factory on Bordesley St there's a canal wharf. I remember seeing something about a redevelopment of the site that would also "restore" the canalside.

There are a number of possible development projects planed for Digbeth area, including Typhoo Wharf.

See here:

https://bigcityplan.birmingham.gov.uk/digbeth/

My guess is that most of these wont actually happen till the HS2 train line comes into that area.

The HS2 station is due to be built very near to Typhoo Wharf, alongside Curzon Street, stretching from Moor St station right up to Lawley middleway (the outer ring road).

If / when this is built then I can see the possibility for huge changes to take place in Digbeth (particularly when the Wholesale market moves out as well).

Sadly HS2 wont start running till 2025 (maybe later if there are delays) so we may have a long wait for Typhoo Wharf and other development to take place.

Should have mentioned it earlier but, if I remember correctly, the development had pages online that showed pictures of the old Typhoo wharf which could maybe have been compared with the picture on post #6 above to find out whether that was the wharf in question.
