Professor Steels Hairdressers 40 New Street

Dennis Williams

Gone but not forgotten
Another conundrim I need help with...Graham Knight posted this interesting group of old 1870 photos of a Professor Steele's Hairdressing Emporium in New Street....and it looks so grandiose and vast, I wondered where it was situated...looks a bit like an Arcade to me...could it have been down the bombed out City Arcade perhaps? Anyone got any idea where this was...??

There only mention I can see with an address seems to be for '...haircut and shampoos Steele and Astley, 40 New St...' 30 Oct 1875. 1891 census puts 40 New St between Cannon St and Corporation St, so I suppose it could just about be classed as opposite the station (if there was no number change).
