M40 Motorway 50 Years

The reference given states that the first section was opened in 1967.Not sure where the 50 yeras comes from

First section of the M5 was opened in 1962 I think
So was the M50

M1 south of Coventry was already open, I didnt think the M40 was even thought of.

I used to live in west London over 30 years ago, and I remember the M40 ran from Uxbridge (where it started) to Oxford, where it stopped. I sometimes used it to go to Oxford for the day at weekends.

It originally stopped at Oxford, and it was years before it was joined up to Birmingham (1989/90).

I often wondered why they built it to Oxford and then no more, as it was hardly a major route for traffic and heavy goods vehicles.

I remember in "Yes Minister" it was said that motorways were built from London to Oxford and Cambridge (before being built to say Southampton) because all the transport Civil Servants attended either Oxford or Cambridge universities.

Sorry to all forum members i got it wrong, M40 is 20 yrs old. Len.:redface::redface:

Before the B'ham to Oxford section was open I regularly drove down to London on business. I used to go via Banbury to get to the start at Oxford and found a great shortcut to avoid Banbury town. I now live 1 road off that route! Scarey.
