These houses always stood out as being quite distinctive from the terraces that were the norm in this area of Small Heath.

These houses always stood out as being quite distinctive from the terraces that were the norm in this area of Small Heath.

Small Heath was a scattered rural community with no village focus. By 1834 a small development of large houses had been laid out east of the Small Heath between Green Lane and Grange Road. These were the homes of the upper-middle class set in the countryside away from the booming industry of inner Birmingham. Taken from:

I am guessing these are some of those houses. I wonder how the owners felt about the encroaching city and industry.

The one with the blue door is listed as being up for sale and is named Brearley House, and 95 grange road, there are some internal photos on this site.

I think that Brearley House was Dr Lloyd’s home/practice back in the 50s and 60s. He was our family doctor up to around the time we left the area when I was about 9 or so. A kindly man who was a good friend to our family.
