From a chippy in icknield st to hollywood

That is an amazing story I would love to see the photos and memorabilia that was kept. I wonder if the family still have her trophy for winning Miss Birmingham.

The photo is shown in the article of the lady relative holding the cup !

Hi Wendy and lynn ;
firstly lynn ;i can recall her mother and her chippy as she was our local chippy and her mom was a lovely pleasant lady
always got a smile with people she was the only chippie local that gave you a big bag of chips at no extra cost ;
the bags themselves was larger than the one you got thn and even of todays bags served ;
she had all these pictures of her daughter in large black and white photographs all around the shop walls ;
and if you never knew whom she was and you asked her whom she was ; she would smile and tell you thats her daughter
and she would smile at you and say i am very proud of her her chips at the time was 3d ; old money
always bust her shop was almost next to the gate pub on icknelid street we as kids used to call her airy mary .
and it was great for lyn to discover her story of the daughter and to tell us of her death ;after all these years
lynn ; i do not know how you do it ; you are a star within your own rights
george baines cake shop was on the corner of camden street during heryears on ickneild street then there was an hardwar shop and a cycle
shop just before marys shop ; later the bikeshop moved up across the rd yards from the springhill libary
whom had a news agents next door and almost facing stoddards the butchers and sid cleggs fruit and veg shop whom only started his shop off by only selling all brands of pototoes and nothink else for about three or four months ; then stared to sell or fruit and veg ;
maggie and myself mentioniond afew years back on the forum about ickneild street in the early years ;of her chippy and her mother
but now lynn as got the scooop for us ; brillient lynn ; i will come around for your autograph ; ha;
well done lynn and best wishes astonian;

Thanks for the photo happyguy I wonder how we missed this one! She passed away in 2010!

thanks from me too happyguy..looks like the family have plenty of memories just look at all the photos...

Lisa Daniels.jpg I knew the Chip shop quite well, it was more or less opposite the side of Bulpits. I think the picture shows its approximate position post demolition.

Hi happy guy ;
thanks for the picture the postion of the demo is where stoddards was and the tobbacist and the porn shop
and coming back was sid cleggs fruit and veg ;
if you continued along pasting the demo site you can see where baines shop was on the corner
just as you start to walk past there there was a couple of little shops mary was on the slope of the street ; but you are
quite correct she was facing bulpitts across the rd from the demo site was another chip shop
that was my mothers aunty whom ran that one and there was a news agent s whom had another shop down along spring hill
just passing the spring hill passage ; great ; have a good day best wishes astonian;;

Happy memories !! The missus hailed from Alexandra Street Ladywood and worked at Bulpitts in the early 60s. Can remember the chippie in the block of shops opposite and the pics of her daughter on the wall - sadly flattened in the mid 60s and replaced by a concrete precinct and a plastic pub (the Florin) - all gone now and replaced by Tescos - if that's progress give me the old days anytime !!

I used this chip shop all the time, as I lived just off Pope St., We used to get a good bag of chips for 3d. The photo's of Gladys were always on show in the shop. The only film I remember being in was 'Gambler from Natchez'.
