Findmypast Divorce records

Do any Findmypast users know why ' Civil Marriage & Divorce' is a category in the search facility
but doesn't show divorce records in the results?

Thanks in advance.

They would only show divorces that they have the records for, so if you are searching for a specific divorce they might just not have the record. If within the last hundred years it may have restricted access.

Seems strange, I must have searched hundreds of people during 2022 and never seen a divorce record appear once.
My parents divorce doesn't appear. Also my G Grandfather names his brother on his probate record even though his wife
and three children are all alive at the time, did they divorce? who knows.

If it's just the probate then I think the people mentioned are usually the executors not the beneficiaries. Probate being granted to them to execute the Will.

According to the National Archives "divorce records are not available online". Some early pre 1916 records are but not later records.

I've only come across 2 divorce records for relatives online and they are both prior to 1916 - 1877 and 1909 - they make interesting reading.

I had to pay almost £40 to obtain my grandfathers divorce papers from 1921, I have been told that not many divorce records survived after the 1920's, I have tried to get my own parents divorce papers from the early 1960s but they do not longer exist.

Ignoring the probate.

You can apply and pay for the divorce certificate, I think.https://www.gov.uk/copy-decree-absolute-final-order
You need to know the names of the parties and the year, ideally the case number or it gets increasingly expensive. Older cases used to be reported in newspapers too as pre 1950 divorce was difficult to obtain.
Yes, I did see this information whilst googling before starting this thread. However you still need to know that someone
had actually divorced to have the names, dates, ref number, etc to apply for a certificate.

I'm beginning to think it's a little misleading of FMP to add 'Divorce' to the search category list if the results are unlikely
to show them.

Strictly you don't need the case number, though it will cost you more to search though. I think if you are unsure if there was a divorce and if it was post-war you are unlikely to find any records to search yourself. Depending on how long ago it might have been you could consider paying for a search for the certificate? FMP and Ancestry can only display records that the PRO have made available.

A Family Law specialist could probably advise you for a fee.

There is a divorce index category on fmp with 82000 entries, it says at the top between 1858 and 1903.
I've looked at all the tabs and dropdowns across the top of the page and can't see it MWS.

If you click on All Record Sets and then type in divorce in the top box, Divorce Index will be one of the results. Click on it and it's at the top of this. This record set will be just one of those covered by the Civil Marriage & Divorce category.
