Astoria cinema aston rd north

Astonian

gone but not forgotten
HI GUYS
First of all the last film i seen in that picture house before it became the ATV studios was roy rogers
in a saturday matnee for 3 d
when i came out i was a victim of the hit and run
road accident the car i beleive was a old austin
i went up in the air and travelled along to woolworths before coming down crashing out side hunts
the pawnbrokers, the driver done a runner
the sugeon whom was a witness operated on me at the general as it was in those days
also what i would also like to know and asked
what was the shop number to this pawn brokers
address ,as some people know i am researching
my grand parents family history
and i have just learnt that arther jelf
grand dads brother at a coffee shop at 67
aston rd north ,and in my mind i can recall
most of the shops along there
i can recall the rocky lane shops and the nechells
and the lichfield shop along with park lane
but i am wondering where was no 67 aston rd
north
along that stretch there was quite afew tea shops
around that time and if my memory serves me
right there was one cafe about four doors
from the picture house
so i am trying to calulate where was 67 .and what was next door to it in my mind
so if any body knows what number was the hunts or the picture house would have been would be a great help
to me to claryfi which postion it was
have a nice day every body
best wishes astonion ;;;

hi alf
yes you are correct it was on the coventry rd
it was up on the hill just passed the hay mills social club
which i was a member many years
and at the time i lived in speedwell rd
the steward of the club was an ex shop steward up at
the commercial car place up by the adderly park many years
ago
hi guy,s i have got it from another record ,that arther
was listed at 67 aston rd north and on this cencus
its listed as 105 ; so what do you reckon
now that is gonna get my little tiny brain a little further
to imagine how far along the rd fromthe astoria
and presume it was the other side of the rd
so to my calculation the star pub would have been nearer
than the golden cross
many thanks alf and the team yet again brilliant
have a nice day best wishes astonion ;;;;

Yes all the best to you and mind how you cross the Road Astonian:D

My late Wife used to love dancing in the Lion hall in Lichfield Rd, this is before she met me. I seem to remember another cinema near the Astoria near to town end. it later was used for wrestling and a BBC studio, possibly in Gosta Green ??

Re: Adelpha cinema aston rd north

Astonian

If it were at 67 then the Star on the corner of Yates St across the road was closer. But if it were 105 then the Golden Cross on the other side of Rocky Lane would have been closer.

A photo of the Astoria as a cinema and another later as a Television Theatre before it was converted fully to a television studio.
