A Game Of Sorrows by Shona MacLean

I found it very difficult to put this book down. It's based mainly in Ireland but with links to Scotland, too. It's about the conflicts with the English with plenty of intrigue. Shona MacLean is Alistair MacLean's niece, I believe and she is a top-class authoress. I got this in The Works - 3 books for five and on reflection I would have paid a fiver just for that one book.

Will have to look for that Chris, sounds interesting - may mean a retail therapy trip to Sutton though, as we no longer have "the Works" in Tamworth!
