68 Bristol Road

Davenport

master brummie
I realise this is a very long shot but does anyone have a photograph showing 68 Bristol Road around 1902 ?
It was described as a large Villa type house.
Mike I wonder if you have a map of the area around this time showing this house ?
Thank You .

I’ve added the number of the house to the thread title Davenport as it’s a long road. Hope someone can help you with a photo and map. Viv.

In case you haven’t seen this Davenport, it might be of interest. Viv.

This is a drawing of the house. There’s a very long account of the shooting in the newspaper if you’d like me to copy it to this thread. Just let me know. Viv.

Viv you are a ⭐️ star. I have not seen this before. Incidentally I believe he served just one month jail sentence!
THANK YOU. Clive.

Here’s the full article Clive. It accompanied the drawing of the house. I’ve numbered the sections in order in red? Viv.

96 Bristol Road (The Corinthians) is a Grade II listed building, built circa 1885, and is described as being part of the Calthorpe Estate. I would hazard a guess that number 68 was also part of the estate. Close control was kept by the Estate over the size of building plots and the quality of the architecture. The first reference I can find in the papers to number 68 (Birmingham Journal, 17 November 1855) describes it as being called Melrose Cottage, available to let with possession. There follows various adverts for Cooks and Servants, and in 1875 it is referred to for the first time as Melrose Villa.

Thank you so much for this extra information. For me genealogy is not only discovering new family members but learning a little more about their lives including where and when they lived.
The help given on these posts is really appreciated.
Unfortunately I do not know what happened to the family after 1911 when they had moved to Rhyl,
He is now listed as an Insurance agent and his Wife a boarding house keeper (at home)

It is possible that they came back to Birmingham. Both dying in 1926. No apparent deaths in Wales.

Frank may be listed living at 59 Constitutional Hill in 1921. He is alone, listed as separated but his occupation as electro plate work.

These are houses in Speedwell Road, built around the same time, and will be very similar to the houses on Bristol Road. If you look at Wellington Road as well, you can see the grandeur of the area. You can see this house has a coach house built in to it, and one of the adverts for 68 Bristol Road that I mentioned before was for a Groom.

Thanks so much for these two photos and your info.

This will be future research for me, I did see the Frank Davenport 1926 death on Ancestry. Thank you.
