213 Bristol Road, Edgbaston 1830's to 1880's

Thankyou for this help. I am floundering though. What directory are you looking at please?
It is very confusing as the house is 213 Bristol Rd, then before that possibly 101, and before that Tennerian Villa, of which I can't find anything!
I have just found said Horatio Southall in the 1861 census at 326 Bristol Rd. Could this be another number change?

I used Ancestry and called up different directories. Then searched for Bristol Road. As Edmund Robinson is listed at 101 and 213 both listed near Priory Road I think we can be confident they are the same property.
I doubt there was another number change I would think he moved house. (Will have a look later).
It seems on earlier censuses that house names (and numbers) are often missing as there was more interest in people than places.

In the 1862 directory (nearest on Ancestry to 1861 census)
Horatio is at 326

but the same directory also has

So they are not the same place suggesting Horatio moved house.

Janice
This does not help much, but the 1862 corporation directory is a bit peculiar, in that the street section and the names section appear to have been compiled from 2 separate databases, presumably taken at two different times, in that in some cases, if you look up a name from an address in the streets section in the names section, then a different address is given.

I only used the names section.
Also not helping is the fact the two people are both listed on Brisol Road on the 1861 census but only one has a number (Southall at 326) the other (Smithson) is in a different section where there are no house numbers.

Appears to be listed as Tennerian Villa on the 1889 map.
Further to the current research already done on 213. Regarding the name Tennerian Villa, Do you think that there is a connection between Dr E. Robinson being a public vaccinator and the Jennerian Society, which was all about vaccination against Small Pox. Seems like quite a connection. Maybe the name was actually Jennerian Villa? I am trying to find if Dr E Robinson is mentioned in any Jennerian Society literature. Any ideas?

That seems a reasonable guess.

A simple search for Jennerian Society brings up quite a lot of results, not sure how much luck you'd have with past members or associates.

On 1881 census Edmund Robinson is listed at 101, he is is not listed there in the directory of 1876.
1876 Mrs Blood is listed (no further info available)
1868 George Smithson esq
1862

1855 Looks as if it is Mr Horatio Southell but may not be the same house as there seem to be 2 houses listed under Grey Place (numbers 101 and 102)
earlier directories don't list by road but by surname.
This has been so helpful thankyou. I found Mary Blood in the 1871 census for 101 Bristol Rd
and the rest but not with the number but it all looks right. Very helpful.
Now I'm trying to get details from Calthorpe Estate on when it was built and who leased it first?
That will hopefully fill in the earliest blank!

I have found Horatio Southall in a directory listed at 101 Bristol Road. Thank you for getting his name for me.
I'm looking now for someone who specialises in the Calthorpe estate and can help with when the house was built and who leased it first.
I know Birmingham library has a lot of info but it's a minefield to navigate through, and I don't live close by.
Any ideas?
Does anyone know if Terry Slater is still around as he specialised in Edgbaston?

Hi,
Yes I have been in contact with them, but they say they don't have that information, and point me in the direction of the Birmingham Library. There is a huge catalogue of Calthorpe Estate stuff there, but it is massive and difficult to navigate, and you can't view it online either.

May I add a similar question regarding information on 222 Bristol Road where my great grandfather William West lived with his family between 1920 and 1927 when he died. I am not aware of a house name, but I have a picture...222 Bristol Rd.jpg
The 1921 Census refers to it as 22 Bristol Rd but I believe that 222 is correct. I have always understood thatit was demolished as part of a road widening scheme.

In the drectory it is listed between Priory Road and Pebble Mill Road (I have marked these 2 roads in yellowona map published in 1921

Janice, many thanks for all of this information. I had failed to find it. The house was always meant by William to be a family home where his children could gather, but he died early age only 63. His widow moved from there to Pebble Mill Rd.

Pleasure to help. I think sometimes it is having come across similar info before helps track articles or maps down.
There were more ads for sale in 1945. In 1974 there was a planning application by a local college - no documents online as too long ago.

I have not viewed it. Is that easy to do?
You can buy the will for £1.50 from here

The fee includes the will if there was one. In the case of your grandfather you need to enter the details of the probate - ie name, dateof death, date of probate, place of probate etc but they are all in the entry I posted which should show up next to the form.

Thanks Janice. However I tried this and the only year with information was in 1929 where it brought up a page of William Wests, none of whom were correct, and when I included less information it brought up a page of Broadhursts which I certainly do not understand.

Is the probate in post 54 the correct one? If so then it will be there. I will look again later when I put my laptop on. I think you will need to order it but I did one last week and it was there in 3 days - cost £1.50.

Your post 54 is the correct one, but the link brings up nothing for 1928. Interesting to see if you get a different result.

Found it You need an account to order but that is free.

Page 1
West
William
1928
Page 2 don't enter anything

You will get 4 pages of entries (yes it does start with James - no idea why) go to Page 3. William's probate is in last column
Click on "open .....and order form".
You will then get the Page side by side with the form. Copy the details carefully onto the order form (probate is first before death date - I got it wrong once). Pay and wait. They will email when it is available to download.
I think the difficulty was death and probate were in different years.
Good luck and let us know.
