Birmingham (Industrial) Cooperative Society Shops

All these photos of BCS branches ! I'm encouraged to ask if there's a picture of No 6 branch around, (Moseley Rd). I worked there mid-50s.

Hello maypolebaz, is it the shop that is in Mosely at present?? I think it is 154--158 Alcester rd. Mosely.

Folks, genealogy is my "thing" at the moment and in fact I've been at it since the early 2000's. This morning I was working on some Electoral Records and one of the families I happened to pick on was my own maternal grandfather's. In the 1939 Register, I pulled up my Grandfather at 54 Thurlston Avenue, Sheldon. The record showed Edward and Ellen Chinery and their son John E (my Uncle Jack).
What caught my eye was 32 year old Uncle Jack's Occupation. "Collector Co Operative Clubs". I have to assume this related to The Cooperative Society, which would give me a direct connection to the CO-OP.

Re. Froth's post in #101, these are/were the gates. Anyone know if they're still there ? If not where ? Viv.

Just a few things, Re co-op outdoors there was one on the Radleys, Stichers photos in posts 121 and 163 are before and after shots of Acocks Green co-op's, and old brummie, the co-op relocated from Coventry road Sheldon to Lyndon road 2 years ago.

Made a find in a local charity shop today, a 1914 Co-operative Society diary, sadly without any entries, but lots of "interesting" information pages

Very interesting Jim. Like the way the items are simply alphabetical - Bedding following Bacon and Corsets following Coffee ! Viv.

I had a part time job at the Tile Cross Co-op in the 70's and recall that the shops/branches were referenced by a unique number (or maybe all Co-op branches were, regardless of town or district) - is there or does anyone have a list of the Birmingham shops?

Hi Robert. Interesting what you said about relocation to Lyndon Road 2yr ago as there was a co-op at 254 (I think) Lyndon Road way back when I visited in the 80's. Facing it, it was to the left of what was Garners Fruit & Veg Shop with a 'Right of Way' between the two.

Hi guys I have a picture of three co/op shop in a row at 549 / 555 Green lane 1960
On the corner of Hobmoor road, they are now an electricle supplies, and fancy goods shop
The Co/op started up here during the first world war with a Bread Depot
On this subject of the Bread Depot does anybody knows or not when did they started the Co/op Bakery in Manner Road Stechford, or did they move down from Hobmoor lane and commence from there
I met my old Dutches. Whom lived up the road from the bakery on the hill
Out side the public telephone box but she does not know when they set up there Bakery there all those years ago
Best wishes Alan,, Astonian,,''
Hi Astonian, I worked at that co-op Greengrocers from 1968 to 1973 , that was then called 15ff&g ( branch number 15 fish fruit and green grocery ) I would love to see the picture if it's possible. My uncle was a manager at the Bakery in manor road, I don't ever remember him saying that it started off in HobMoor rd.

Stitcher, My mom's family also lived in Oakhill Crescent at no 17. Thanks to the 1939 register I've discovered an aunt and uncle that I had no idea of which was wonderful. Perhaps you may have known my Mom's family.

Hello jmadone, I was born at No 66 and that is at the other end of the crescent so it was quite a way away
from No 17 and I did not know many people from that end of the road. What was the surname?

My mum's first job was at the Bakery in Witton Co-op at the end of the war, after she returned from evacuation. I'm wondering if that would be the Witton Lodge Road branch, or was there another in Witton? Her cousin worked in the drapery department of the same branch, so I'm thinking it would have been of significant size.

Pimpernel, the was a Co-op on the corner at Witton diagonally opposite to the pub. I know there's a picture on the forum but I haven't been able to find it yet.

There are quite a few photos of BCS and Birmingham Industrial Co-Op posted in error on one of the three?TASCOS threads, Lady P. Maybe there?

Thanks Alan, I remember the one at Witton as I thought the original building was much nicer than the present one. I think it may have been something to do with buses but my memory has failed me.

There is this picture which shows the Witton Co-Op but unfortunately a tram blocks some of the view. Keith Berry took some pics but only partially showing the shop... :)
A photo of Witton Square when the 3X tram was in service there.

oM, that's probably the picture I was thinking of. It looks as though there were 4 shops - greengrocers on the left (may have sold fish) and probably a grocers on the right. I presume there would have been a butchers too. The one at Stockland Green had the same selection with a chemists shop on the end. However, Pimpernel reckons there was a drapers and a bakery at Witton. Very interesting.

Lady P,
Keith Berry photographed Witton and made a comment about the Co-Op but did not a get a full shot of it. A telephone box blocked the view in one night shot and the other shot was a side view.
I spotted this aerial view dated 1947 by 'britainfromabove' which shows the complete building but not enough detail to identify each shop. Maybe five shops and looks like it was 'early closing day' or a Sunday.
