Astoness,
Have just looked at an old map 1913 and I would say that it is almost certainly the pub at the junction of Wainwright St, and Portland St. both meeting at Lichfield Rd.
The angle of the streets is exactly the same as the photo and even the cut off corner meets all the criteria.

john thanks very much.. dont know where high st comes into it then.. fraid im very perticular with my photos as i dont like to post them if the location is not correct. like i say the caption may well be wrong.

Hi , Just confirming with John that the Manor is in Portland St and Wainright St off Lichfield Rd at Aston Cross. Had many a pint in there as it was opposite Ansell's Brewery , used to pop in after work for a quick one. Mike

thank you john and mike.. so that puts pic one to bed... but what about pic two...the caption on that says grafton st...

Astoness,
I don't think there's much chance of finding this pub without another photo to match up the window.
I have enhanced it slightly, but there is no visual clue whatsoever.

thanks again john.. it may be one of those that we will never find out about.....the only thing i can see of similarity between the two pics is that that are both on a corner....could be the same pub or mabe not..

thanks for your help..

Looked up Grafton Road in my old Wakelins Street Guide, there are two

1. off 80 Sandwell Road, Handsworth.

2. off 48, Henley Street, Sparkbrook.

There is no Grafton Street listed.

hi sylvia.. thanks for that... i reckon they are pics of the same pub in aston.. just off to visit dad in hospital.. will delve into it later.

lyn:)

I have adjusted both photographs so the are now both black and white and as you can see they are both the same pub check out the windows and stone work the pattern on the glass as never changed.

I don't remember there being a pub on Grafton Road when I was a child and from what I remember they were houses built maybe in the early 1920's or even after that but I might be wrong. There were some very big older houses on the top half of Sandwell Road, I used to walk past them to go to school and to my grandma's. There is a Grafton Manor on Garfton Lane in Bromsgrove could there be a connection with that? :) Mo

I don't know where the roads have been renamed in Aston could this have been High Street when the photo was taken.:)Mo

Astoness,
On closer inspection of the photos again, I noticed the guttering and downpipe coming from the top of the bay window, almost identical.
The window has obviously been changed and also the door, the general layout is the same, but the guttering and downpipe are the positive clue.
I would say that you are right it is an earlier photo of the same pub.

thanks so much john.. i thought they were one and the same pub..the captions are wrong... i will adjust them...

cheers

Hi astoness
theres no question on the mannor taveren john as got the true info ,
i was missing when this one came on the forum ,it most certainly the mannor i reconised it straight away, for the simple reason i was born on the door steps of the pub just on the corner of lichfeild rd right next to the widdows arms which is just across the rd and when i grew up i worked next door at buttons ltd anddrank most nights in the mannor
even thou the old man [my] ran the golden cross at aston cross
and as a kid guy fawkes out side knew quite afew familys down wainwright st, and portland st freinds as well down the terrace ,
best wishes to you all astonian ,;;

The Aston Manor is indeed at the junction of Wainright St.and Portland St.(the second steepest hill in Brum),We knew it as the widows, the reason is probably lost in the mist of time,lt's still there,or was a few years ago.
It was a big favourite with the Ansells draymen.
