Thank you Janice, whenever I see a property of that size I always wonder how they kept it tidy!! I expect they had servants, probably in that wing to the left of the main house. Not for me though.

I wondered about only 2 people listed on 1939 register in that huge property. As you say they probably had servants - perhaps no longer live-in by 1939.
I was trying to track use of name Bryn Teg.

Hello Pedro and Janet, I was very impressed with all the information you discovered about The Leasowes and wondered if you could find anything for a house called Bryn Teg please? I know it is/was at 35 Bracebridge Road and I imagine it was another large property. It appears on the 1911 & 1921 census.

Many thanks.

The family living there were:
just thought i would look into the family who lived there in 1911/21 and betty gwyneth jones who was only 15 when she died has a probate record and is buried at sutton coldfield cem..her father herbert scott jones died at bryn teg in 1937..probate on anc and he is also buried at sutton..i have gone back as far as herberts father and no sign of the family being born in wales..so either they just liked the name of bryn teg or maybe the previous owners called it by that name

When she died in 1923 the house was referred to as Bryn Teg

As it was on 1911 census

And the 1921 census

Also in 1937 when her Father died

but (as posted previously #180) in 1939 it was just 35 no reference to Bryn Teg.

What a lot of information. Thank you all. I should think there was a Welsh connection somewhere with Jones and Gwynneth and what a strange name Guthlac is. English though apparently.

I love the way that a question on this forum keeps bringing up more and more. Wonderful.

I thought of Wales as well but...
Betty's Father Herbert was born in Leeds
Herbert's Father Evan (more welsh links?) was born in Essex

Betty's mother was born in Birmingham

So a Welsh connection seems to have been a distance back in the line.

The Builder, Jan 1902.
SCHOOLS, SUTTON COLDFIELD

“The schools which have been in course of erection in connexion with the Congregational Church, Sutton Coldfield. were formally opened. The new schools have been erected by Messrs. W. Lee & Son, of Aston, from the plans of Mr. Harry H. Reynolds, architect, Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield, at a cost of 2,500l., and will afford accommodation for 350 scholars.”

This is also from the Builder of November 1902 and another Church being built in Sutton Coldfield. But where are the locations of the Churches ?

Just caught up with post 197 Pedro, and I think Radiorails is right. The article says 'carrying the Sutton Coldfield branch line' which is now the Cross-City route which goes over this bridge.

Does anyone have access to a directory for Sutton in the 1960's please? A local artist, Jeff Lockett, is re-creating scenes from this era and is asking which shop stood between Granada and George Mason on the Parade around the time of the World Cup in 1966. The artist is especially interested in particular memories of people in Sutton as much as the buildings themselves.

Many thanks,

I had an uncle, with family, who lived in the Sutton Coldfield area, don't ask me where as I only visited them once in 1953 or 1954. What I do remember was that the Sutton Coldfield transmitter could be seen from their garden and I calculated that if the mast fell down in their direction the very top and antenna would likely land in or near the back garden. The mast and its apparatus were put into operation in December 1949 and was the second such mast after Crystal Palace in London.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was brought up in Sutton during the 50s and 60s. I have just read through this history of the shops on the Parade and these are the ones that brought back memories. Wimbush, Rose greengrocer,. Maypole, George Mason, Plowrights, Trows ice cream, Pattisons cafe,Harris dry cleaners,Bains cakes, Firkin pork pies, Moore's cycles, ,Dewhurst butchers, Timothy whites and Taylors, Marsh and Baxter, Eames jewllers, Dodds ironmongers, Rowbothams, Scotch Wool Shop and of course Gills where I was a Saturday girl.
The names bring up so many memories of shopping in a proper High St. Shops that my Mother and Grandmother had used .
