Adderley & Cherrywood Schools

Hi.
I was at cherrywood 1962-1967. Do you remember Mr Eddie Mathews he taught Art.
The Spencer Davis Group attended a social. Mr Mathews arranged it as he was a jazz trumpet player. I remember Miss Oldbury, Mr Hughes great maths teacher.
Does anyone remember Mr Westwood C.T.D. teacher.

I worked with Tony Belfield,Roy Pugsley and Martin Statham on the Bullring market in the 60's
Yes I remember Tony Belfield, he was at Cherrywood the same time as me . A great character we had lots of funny times. Martin Statham was Tony’s friend, Martin Rathby was at Cherrywood too.
Does anyone remember Mr Rea.?

I was head girl at Cherrywood 1965/6. I remember Mr Hughes maths teacher throwing the blackboard duster at you if you were talking in class. Mr Tennent took over head master. Mr Brookfield was history teacher what a character he was.

I remember Mr Hinks at Adderley road school . He was a very obnoxious man.
I lived in Ash Road in the flats. Does anyone remember Sandra Powell.

I know Roy lived overseas somewhere (could have been Spain) but I have don't know what happened to Tony. I don't recall the name Martin Stratham but I do remember Martin Raithby as he was the only boy who decided to learn Typing and Shorthand. I think his plans were to become a Journalist but I have no idea what happened to anyone after I left Cherrywood at Christmas 1966. Did you go to Cherrywood?
I remember Martin Raithby and Tony Belfield great guys. Do you know where they are now. ? Yes I went to Cherrywood loved it. Cheryl Griffin do you remember her. ?

Hi Mr abbey and Sue.I remember both of you from Adderley.I was captain of the football team 1964/65 season Gillian Taylor Wilma Bell Janet Plumb Annette Shilliker Alan Bradnock were all my year.Mr Abbey you looked after the football team.Remember the sports Argus and reading about you and Moseley rugby clubMany years later I worked with David and Mark Linnett who went on to play for England.I was a police cadet and one of my instructors was Nigel Horton.Sue I used to live at Flat1 51 Ash road Saltley. I think one of your neighbours was Mr andMrs Griffiths whose son John also served like me for 30 years as a policeman
Hi. I lived in the above flat of Annette Shillikerin in Ash road on the opposite side of the church.

Great to read all this. Yes, I was at Adderley Infants and Juniors, then onto Cherrywood. I lived in the flats opposite Hall Road. Mr Tennant was our form master in the first year then I moved to 2nd year and it was Miss Oldbury. After 2 weeks the school decided I was too old to be in the 2nd year and moved me to 3rd year where I was in the same class as Roy Pugsley, Tony Belfield, you, Martin Raithby Jean Kennedy etc etc. I remember Eddie Matthews very well (he was form master in 4E) He was the teacher in charge of the Library and Jean Kennedy and myself used to run The Library Journal. I made up a song to the tune of Uncle Tom Cobley about Mr. Tennant's car which we published! I remember Cheryl Griffin too, she left school at the same time as I did, Christmas 1966. She was very good friends with Barbara who lived in Cherrywood Road close to the little shop. My brother, John, went to Adderley too. He is 18 months older than me. He passed his 11+ and went to Saltley Grammar and was in the same form as Mr. Tennant's son, Lawrence. I remember Mr. Hinks at Adderley (frightened of him!). Mr Hughes at Cherrywood taught us Maths. I was in detention once and it fell on the day he was on duty. All he did was took out names and then told us all to go. Remember Mr. Jackson, English? Mr. Frear, boys PE. Then there was a female PE teacher who become Mrs. Frear but I cannot remember her name. How about Isabel Bluck and Paul Bamford? By the way Mr. Matthews moved to Wales, sadly he died recently, however his son carries on with the music. So may happy memories.

I remember you very well. Didn't you stay on an extra year? I just know you were older that everyone else in the class, By the way Tony Belfield died some years ago.

Yes I stayed on for an extra year.

Oh that’s so sad Tony Belfield has passed away.
Do you know much about him and where he lived. He was so funny.

I sadly lost my husband earlier this year. He went to Central Grammar School.

Did you live in Ash Road ?

I can’t remember you .

Don't know anything about Tony. Although someone on this forum told me he worked in the markets with Roy Pugsley but I don't know anything else. I lived at 55 Ash Road. There were three blocks of flats opposite Hall Road. We lived in the first block on the ground floor. John Griffiths lived upstairs at number 3. he had a sister called Margaret. Susan Newport (brother Michael) was a good friend of mine, she lived at number 4 but went to Moseley Art School. On the third floor was the Hollis family and Gillian Donovan. Her family moved to Walsall before I went to Cherrywood. She was a little older than me but we still saw a lot of each other.

Do you remember Mrs. Cutts? She had a small grocery shop the other end of Ash Road closer to Adderley Road so you probably would not have got down there very often. Also do you remember the two elderly ladies who had the sweet shop round in Arden Road? I remember they retired and went to live in Blackpool. Mary Bell worked for Mrs. Cutts for a short time, then I worked for her. I spend many a Saturday trekking up and down Ash Road with boxes of groceries. I worked 8 hours each week and she paid me 1/- per hour. I left school at Christmas 1966 didn't take my CSE exams. Cheryl Griffin left at the same time too. We went to the Youth Employment together to get a job. It was a lot easier then, always got work of some kind. I worked for a solicitor in Steelhouse lane as an Office Junior and she went to a wholesale grocery company somewhere in Aston I think.

Hi. it is so good hearing the old days thank you.

Yes I remember Mrs Cutts a needle to an anchor you could get anything in her shop.
A big step up into the shop.
Yes I remember the two old ladies in the sweet shop. So miserable the shop was dark and brown as I remember. There was a grocery shop on the edge of Ash Road and Adderley Road opposite Morris Commercial. Alice’s. She made lots of sandwiches at lunchtime for the Morris Commercial workers, I can smell it now. The salad!!!
Also the chocolate box at the top of Bower Road, and the cobbler just around the corner from the chocolate box.

I lived in the flats towards the top of Ash Road, on the same side as Mrs Cutts. There was a girl who lived in the flats went to Moseley Art school her name was Pauline.
I can’t remember Roy Pugsley but I remember his name.
Pat Crawley lived in the flats she went to Saltley Grammar school . I think her family emigrated to Australia.
