OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

Now the world has quietened down after christmas I thought I would start posting some of the pictures I have been tidying up. They are a mix of old and new and due to a lot been pictures of pictures there is a chance of duplication - if this happens can you point it out and I will replace it hopefully with something a bit more unique.
The first selection from Roll 30 were taken in the 1990's of photos originally taken in 1964/65.

First we have the Crown Inn Cope Street, Ladywood, M & B pub with a nice street lamp on the corner, taken 29th September 1964, I assume a newsagents next door with the hoarding in front of the shop. On the corner of Springfield Street if I am reading it correctly.

Next we have St Pauls Tavern, I have posted an image of this pub but from the other direction, bit of a distant view but shows how it fitted into the street scene, much changed around there and now the area to be seen - if only by the youngsters!!

Thrown a few back there while working in George Street .

this is 43 Stour Street, Ladywood licensee Mary .... ? just cannot make it out - someone with the books may help here.
What interests me is the right hand side of the property - is this all the outdoor - there seems to be a number of windows and pipes suggesting a number of properties and what seems to be a large porch in the middle but to where?

It looks like Mary Eunance Samuel as Licensee

I have thisphoto already, there dated 1964. However I am not sure where it is. It is not the one on Grange road. or Gt Lister or Temple row, There was one at 142 Sandpits, which would fit, but I do not have a photo to confirm. But it probably is that one

Steve. Can you check the writing on this one. going back to 1021 on kellys, I can find no mention of anything at no 43. But in the 1930s there was a beer retialer at no 47 , Walter James Sabell, the licence changing to Mrs Mary Eleanor sabell between the 1940 and 1943 editions. She remained there till some time between 1952 and 1955

So sorry - Quite clearly says 47 on my list and I cannot even find an excuse for the error. I have amended the details to 47, thanks Mike

We now move to 112 Phillip Street Aston and an outdoor but this does have the look of a shop about it - Pool Terrace on the wall, curtains on the door and a trapdoor for deliveries.

EDIT, Address amended thanks Brummy-lad

Quick update - I moved onto Roll 45 only to find a number of pictures I posted in 2023, however these are better copies so I have been replacing these and then hunting to check for duplicates so this next image is the next " new" photo I believe.

This is the Roebuck, Hollier Street and Darwin Street, M and B pub but in an unusual style for them?, Stone work on the ground floor then small bay windows with leaded glass on the first and small plain windows on the third floor. Interesting window styling on the property on the left and a small single storey building on the end.

Starting to look rather worse for wear and as if it is one of the last buildings in the area judging by the adjacent property this is the Anchor Inn, Benacre Street off Gooch Street, taken in 1950's. Not really sure if this was still open although it still has its windows and the large lamp outside , just next to the street lamp !!, bit of heavy boarding up next door too.

We now have another outdoor - this one seems to be still in use - it has a licensee board above the door - looks like Elizabeth Mullins. Location is given as 187 Francis Street and taken 3rd November 1963. Mitchell and Butlers wording on a painted background - was there a painted sign there in the past ? . Nothing else to suggest it was an outdoor but I assume if you lived in the area you knew where and what it was.

There is another view of the outdoor on the Passageways and Snickets thread…..Post 416. I’ve tried to copy it but the image is too large.

Love the simplicity of this property, Tilton Road apparently, an outdoor, a step up to the steps , front door - front window and thats it basically, like the leaded glass in the front window and the simple things like the bottles of milk on the step next door - when was the last time you saw that ?
Edit: From Mikejee - 37 Tilton Road 1956. the 1956 kellys lists licensee as Leonard Peters, thanks Mike.

Now in 1956 and we have the Bulls Head, Buckingham Street and Howard Street, I recognise this picture for some reason but I cannot see that I have posted it , so it must have been when I was looking through and saw the car, looks like a proper american one rather than the copies we started to build. Nice brick built pub, corner windows all the way up, small bay window on the left with windows on the floors above and a small shop to the right.

I have this already from somewhere, labelled as 37 Tilton Road 1956. the 1956 kellys lists licensee as Leonard Peters . It certainly looks like /peters over the door, though Christian name not readable

again with this picture I am having a deja vous moment - but cannot find a post - feel free to shout!!

This is the Victoria Inn Bristol Street - next to No. 197 and so much to see, either side - TV shop and the other side is that a Launderette?, both of which are almost impossible to find, two telephone boxes.
The pub, large leaded front window, lamp, and Victoria Inn, lettering in the glass above the door, and in small writing is Victoria Inn , above the door and next to the very large Mitchell and Butlers wording, oh and the Heinz advert.
Edit: address amended following confirmation from Mikejee

For a bit of difference, here is a few busses, I am not an expert - so feel free to offer more detail - I only have number and location and those I am reading off my sheet!!

First we have No. 8 coming out of Islington Row, quite a busy scene, Provincial Bank in the background and unfortunately due to the quality of the image not much else - taken in August 1961, for those that do not know Birmingham Corporation bus Cream and very dark blue livery. Also note there is no advert along the middle panel - see the next image for what I mean.

I too thought it familiar, but then realised I was probably remembering this, after it had ceased to be a pub. Not sure where this one came from originally

Offering a nice background to this No. 8 is the Harborne Road, note as mentioned on the last picture the Vernons sign along the side. Nice selection of buildings, iron railings and telephone box. Classic JOJ number plate, I was going to be clever and google JOJ and say what it was but JOJ number plate were on Guy, Crossley as well as single deckers - however I feel this is a Guy Arab .

Yes it was 193 Bristol St

A bit different now is this tram standing on Washwood Heath Road , I dont have a year but I feel it must be in the '50's , I like how the adverts vary - Tizer down the side however E. Goodman complete house Furnishers is on the front , love the shop frontages and people going around their business, shop blinds are down on some shops, the tram stop sign and the chemist sign above the blind in front of the Tram
