In 1995 I retired after 42 years with Royal Mail, we used to come
over to
Birmingham quite often, Enid would go round the Shops(surprise,
surprise) whilst I wondered round with my Samsong 10/40 SLR.
Here, hopefully are some of the photos I took at that time, Bernardlong service dinner653.jpglong service dinner654.jpglong service dinner655.jpglong service dinner656.jpg

Lovely photos, Bernard. I keep meaning to visit the remains of St. Thomas and the Peace Gardens.(#2 pic 1) You can just see the Colonnade which was moved from Broad St.
rosie.

The 'sculpture' called 'Forward' was made in fibreglass but [allegedly] less the [costly] inhibitor that would have prevented it sustaining a flame. The 'sculpture' was indeed set alight and damaged beyond repair many years later.

Here is a link to a full set of photographs and the sorry tale. Describing it as Fatally Burnt is a bit over dramatic in my view as it was not a living thing.

That about sums it up cost,is a prohibitor of many things today !! If they put a preventative in the fibirglass they would have used Hammers to distroy it. Why it is such a good sculpyure which I take it it was to show how Birmingham indeed go's Forward like it's Moto ..

Still a waste .....
Thanks for info Bernard

Pete as the article says some loved it others hated it. Bit like Marmite. One of the criticisms at the time was that he had simply reworked a design he did for a City in Canada - which to my eye did bear a lot of similarities.

Great pics Bernard, especially the now burnt out sculpture - I liked this, even though it was acopy, the faces and stances of the crowd were really ggod.

Still a few post cards we found in Enids Dads papers when he passed away in 1975 if anyone is interested? Bernard

Bernard

Would love to see some if you could please.

It quite interesting to see in your photos how much change had taken place in recent years

Great photo's Bernard, I enjoyed looking at them all, and being reminded of the sculpture. Thank you.

On your second append, third picture in, it shows the James Brindley pub in Gas St basin.

Lots of people sitting outside next to the canal.

Rather sadly that pub has been closed for a couple of years now (maybe longer) and it is just a building sitting there doing nothing.

#3 is a lovely postcard Bernard, the one of the Mikado Cafe and trams. Can't see the others, but the one that's loaded is a joy. Viv.
