National Memorial Arboretum

Its not often Coldstreamers get on jobs like that. I dont think the
Royal family has ever forgiven us for being part of Cromwells New
Model Army, but had young Oliver not been killed in the war we might
never have had another King or Queen. Bernard.

Sounds like a very long day Baz, whereabouts were you on the line out, if I remember I heard about the Guardsman who slipped, like you say lucky he kept his head otherwise a disaster!!!!! We will be in trouble for going off thread any more, write on National service.

Yesterday (Sat) at the NMA I visted the HMS Ganges Memorial, it was 53 years ago yesterday that I first walked through the gates at HMS Ganges,

At the risk of being off thread too, just to let anthey make a spectacular show at the Arboretum on ty riders know that the registation for this years ride to the wall is open and selling quickly for the first Saturday in October, raising money for the arboretum to continue.

Date: 06 October 2012
Join us on Saturday 6 October for Ride To The Wall (RTTW). Now in its fifth year, this event involves a memorial ride in to the Arboretum culminating in a service of remembrance for the names included on the Armed Forces Memorial.

Watch this website and that for RTTW for more details as they are confirmed.
Time: 2pm for the service of remembrance, programme of activities throughout the day
Venue: onsite and beside the Armed Forces Memorial

Thanks for the extra info Dave, hubby was registering as i put post on, he has his t-shirt, very smart for the 5th anniversary of the ride!
Have to say, just watching all the bikes leave Drayton manor is touching, lots of people line the road with flags etc, and Mick says on the way is the same and car drivers honk in support, but he says the complete silence for the service from the thousands of bikers there is amazing, reduces even the hardest bikers to tears.
A worthy cause I think.

What have these modern politicians done to the worlds greatest army?? our county regimental system was the the finest in the world and was known as such by all friends and enemies alike.

Thanks for the utube link Dave. I bet it was great seeing the Hurricane fly past. My old Uncle Jack would have loved it. He was a cook in the RAF. He used to tell us how difficult it was to feed all the hungry young men with limited supplies. He got malaria out in Africa and was injured by shrapnel but went right through the war. He was a great character who lived with us for over 30 years.

The CAA only on Friday approved the flight plan for the Fly Past over the Falklands Memorial on Sunday 20th May at the Dedication Service.

There will be the Vulcan, a Chinook (RAF), a Sea King (RN) and a Gazelle and a Scout (Army historical flight) - all Veterans of the Falklands War.

The pilot of the Vulcan will be Martin Withers, a SAMA (82) member and the pilot who flew it on that Black Buck Raid in 82. There will also be two other Falkand Vet Crew members as part of the flight next week

Date: 20 May 2012

Such a poor turn out for those that risked everything for others during the war. Wish I could have been there but I had to work.

These people should have been bestowed with the highest of honours years ago in my oppinion.

My son called in on his return journey after doing a few jobs in Lichfield today. He and his friend approached the area they wanted to look at and were greeted by a man in combat uniform. They had a short chat and when Jason told this officer that he knows RSM ******** of 45 Commando, a female officer was appointed to show them around.

The Falklands Memorial, when quiet, it was well attended.

Great to see (lovely photo's as usual), I have a very good friend here in Cambridge he is a tailor on the market place, he was on the "Sir Gallahad", (Welsh Guards), and his memories of that day never leave him, and he says will never go away.

A paramedic I once worked with had been in the RAMC in the Falklands and used to tell us that he had been on Gallahad. He was allways a bit of a loose cannon so we took his story with a pinch of salt.
One day, on a video, we found the newsreel clip of the lifeboat being rowed ashore from the burning ship. We slowed the tape down and there he was, sitting in the stern, our Tommy !

No disrespect Dave but having been there on a "normal" day I find myself wondering just where all those people managed to find a parking space !

maypolebaz on busy days there is a large overflow car park just passed the main entrance. such as this day

Visitors will be directed to the overflow car park which is opposite the quarry. Free shuttle transport will operate for those who are unable to walk the short distance to the Visitor Centre (5-10 minutes). Alternatively, visitors may be dropped off beside the Visitor Centre with vehicles then being parked up at the appropriate location.
