Does anybody know anything about 'Winters Stores'? It was in a similar line of business to 'Barrows' (Bull Street?).

I understand that they were located in the City Arcades between Union Street and New St/High St at the 'Big Top end. This end of the arcade having been bombed during WWII.

My Great Uncle worked there between the wars (Harry Percy) and died in the early 1970's and I never knew of his exsistence until I started researching my family history.

In the 60s I,m almost certain there was a Winter's store at the top end of Dale End, as you say a good class store similar to Barrows.
 
In 1964 Kellys there is a Winters Stores at 164 to 166 & 170 to 176 Corporation St. It is classed as a retail food specialist, confectioners, fruiters and cafe proprietors.
They also had another shop at 214 Alum Rock Rd. O0

Thanks for the information on Winters Stores - I know it's been a long time since I last dropped in. It's a long story on that one which ended up in me being retired, though not from choice.

This has confirmed some of the sketchy details I have. More information would always be welcome. I guess it's now up to me to engage in further hunting perhaps see if there are any adverts for the business in the local newspapers.

My sister is the real genealogist in the family but as she is still working and she doesn't get as much time as she'd like to engage in family tracing.

[Surnames sort: ROBERTS, PERCY, NURSE, NORTON.
Also anything about the BARBER FAMILY (of Barber Institute, Birmingham University) as employers. One of my Grandmothers was a seamtress to the family.

Winters stores was located on the corner of Corporation Street and James Watt Street, we used to do all the signwriting on the glass doors, it was quite a big frontage about 3 or 4 separate doors.
The gentleman that used to come to our sign studio in Stafford Street and give us the order was off with flu one day and came back to work too early-he was dead by the end of the week.
My boss used to send me there for a sandwich and cream bun for his lunch.
The colours of the shop were mainly green, cream and gold leaf.
