Getting Logged Out

Hi Lady P, I just tried an experiment

I was logged in on https and clicked on a bookmark which I had for https and could run both versions with no problems or log outs.

I then logged out and then logged back in on the https version and looked at the 'Then and Now' thread. In post#258 I clicked on a link which would go to a https post in the 'Where was your first holiday' thread. I then had an unwanted log out.

I then logged in again on https and clicked on an httpss bookmark I have for https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/new-st-station-2015.41869/#post557314 and had no log outs even when I was running https and https at the same time looking at any threads.

It is all a bit confusing ... but for me the situation is ...

If I start the forum with an https log in I will eventually get an unwanted log out.

If I start the forum with https I stay logged in.

I'm running Windows 10 and usually the Chrome browser, but can run the Edge browser. I use Norton AV.

Using Windows 10 and Chrome Browser

I first tried this.
Logged in with https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php
Forum running normally for me.
Pasted https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php into address bar
Forum now changed to https but running normally and I remained logged in.
Used 'Search Titles only' for thread 'Stevens Bar' and found it.
Went to post#5 in that thread and clicked on the link in the post.
The https link in that post sent me to a thread 'Pubs and Inns of Bull Ring and Market areas from 1940s'
Came back to the 'Forums' screen but the link had now put me in the https version.
I then changed in and out of https/https and had no unwanted log outs everything running normal.
Logged out myself.

I then tried this.
Logged in with https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php
Forum running normally for me
Used 'Search Titles only' for thread 'Stevens Bar' and found it.
Went to post#5 in that thread and clicked on link in the post.
The https link in that post sent me to a thread 'Pubs and Inns of Bull Ring and Market areas from 1940s'
but an unwanted log out had occurred.

Conclusion for me on my devices including an iPad is ...

If I log in on https, everything runs normal with no unwanted log outs even if I deliberately select a https bookmark.

If I log in on https, I am likely to get unwanted log outs, definitely if I click on internal links in a earlier posts.

I now sign in "https" and usually stay signed in, but occasionally something will give me an unexpected sign out, never analysed exactly what.
I find that if I get an email alert of a posting and sign in from that I finish up in "https" or maybe in whatever the "poster" was signed into.

Choosing to look at a picture or posting a message does it for me. Not a major problem, just a minor annoyance.

Maurice

Having to log in only takes 20 seconds and is only a minor annoyance as Maurice says.
I did notice the other week when running Microsoft's Edge browser that there was a setting which not only remembered my forum user name, it also remembered my password and when I entered just the first letter of my user name, Edge took over an logged me in without me doing anything. I was not too keen on that 'helpful feature' so switched it off.

Thanks oldMohawk, I've saved all your suggestions and will take my time to work it out. I've been logged out 3 times today but it doesn't take long to log back in, just frustrating.

one of our new members has sent me a private message to say he is trying to make a donation but keeps coming up error ...advised him to try and again and if no luck will have to pass it onto jim or warren

For those of us who use Chrome (current version 55) I noticed the following from Google about the forthcoming Chrome 56
Starting January 2017, Chrome 56 will label HTTP pages with password or credit card form fields as "not secure," given their particularly sensitive nature.
Eventually, we plan to label all HTTP pages as non-secure, and change the HTTP security indicator to the red triangle that we use for broken HTTPS.

The forum has a large number of https internal links in posts so with ref to an earlier post#92 I again tried the following.

Logged in on the https version
I then opened the https version (in new tab) and of course I was also logged in there.
Looked around, searches, reading posts, etc and I did not have any unexpected log outs.

Confirmation...
If I log in https first and then open the https I have no unexpected log outs.
If a link took me to https, it stayed https unless I directed it back to https.
Got the same results with Edge (Microsoft) and Safari (iPad).

So will wait and see what happens when Chrome 56 arrives.

I'm having a problem logging in today - I've tried a few times, putting in my user name and password but it just won't log me in!

The only way I can access the website is through the notification emails I receive when someone has posted on a thread I have contributed to.

Not sure what I can do - can one of the mods help please?
Thanks.

Sorry everyone, I've just tried again and got in this time - very strange!

had this a few times recently, just thought that I was 'nt welcome anymore, not happy of course, but relieved that I am not the only one. Paul

One possible reason ....
Sometimes members will not be able to log-in because they are already logged in.
I just tried a test of logging in when I was already logged in and the result was as shown in screenshot below.
loginexpt.jpg
If you see this then it could be the reason.
With this test my computer appears to not accept the forum log-in cookie (xF_user) because I was already logged in and had already got the cookie.

Its just started to happen to me over the last few days. It keeps my username and password ok, but it removes the tick from ..stay logged in... So I have to tick that every time I want to log in. Not much of a problem, but after all these years of being permanently logged in, I just got used to it.

Because we all use different browsers and even different versions of Windows it is difficult to determine causes for random log-outs etc. The forum has been in existence a long time so has mixed https and https content. The forum's log in cookie xF_user can be received in two versions
Any kind of connection

Secure connections only
Capture2.JPG
On my laptop using Win 10, Chrome, sometimes Edge, I just have to ensure I get the 'Any kind of connection' cookie in first and then I have no random log outs and can stay logged in forever if I want to.

If the 'Secure connections only' cookie gets in first I will get random log outs when I access https parts of the forum particularly if I click a https link.

The cookie which gets in first has control !

I've been having the same problem for a few months now Carolina. Ever since I joined the site I always stayed logged in. I don't know the cause, or why it started happening, but it's no problem to log in, I'm just curious as to the cause. I'm running Chrome on windows 10 desktop. I have never tried any other browser because I would rather stay with Chrome.

It is strange that some members have never had unwanted log outs and others are regularly having them.

I have been trying a 'fix' with a Toshiba Laptop (Windows 10) using either Chrome, Edge, and IE11 browsers, and also with an iPad (iOS9) using Safari browser.

I have since stopped both devices during the day and overnight and am always logged in when restarting. Will switch off now and see if I'm logged in tomorrow !

and i am afraid i have been having problems lately..something i have never had happen before... in itself having to log in every time is no big deal but tonight i was logged in and tried to view some photos and had a notice come up to say to view them i had to be logged in...but i was logged in:rolleyes:

Morning Lyn. I may be wrong here but when I had problems I was advised to delete my browsing history and start again so to speak. I cleared the history, logged in (remembering to click remember me) and things then settled down. Hope I am not tempting fate by putting that!

morning janice my son is going to have a look at this problem when time permits but the problems i have are happening on both my desk top and new lappy...seems ok this morning on both..so far

Ref post#109, I switched off (hibernated) my laptop last night logged in to the forum with Chrome, Edge, and IE11 running at the same time. I also switched off (sleep) my iPad also logged in to forum with Safari running.

This morning I switched on both devices and I am still logged in.
I tried my 'Stevens Bar' test (see post#92) and still remained logged in.

We all run our computers and tablets differently but for me the first method in post#92 works.
It makes sure the 'any kind of connection' cookie gets in first.

The reason log-outs happen during browsing images etc is the forum has mixed https and https content and the 'any kind of cookie' can deal with this. The 'secure connection only' cookie cannot.
See the different cookie types in post#105.

Same on my iPad, see image below.
I tap the top left bookmark and log in. If I want to run https I tap the next bookmark and https opens in a separate tab, but I am already logged in with the first bookmark and the 'any kind' cookie is in control.

Received email link on iPad this morning
Accessed Forum from email
Already logged on - fine
Closed browser window
Half hour later
Accessed Forum from browser
Had to log on!

The reason could be that the email links from the forum are https and when you click on them you get the https connection.

I still get problems on and off, some mornings I can't log in at all, I put my name and password in - press log in and it comes up blank again.

I always get into the site ok through my email notifications.

Well ... it is definitely possible to be logged-in and NOT logged-in at the same time.

I have two tabs open in my browser at the moment and one shows me logged in and I can see pics etc while the other tab shows me not logged-in and I can't see the pics.

Just for a laugh I decided to try a log-in with the browser tab which said I was not logged-in but it would not let me, with a red error message indicating that there was someone else with the same username and password already logged in, and this was of course me logged-in with the other tab !

Oh well not to worry ! ... :D

After some time of me being logged out every time I left the site, I thought I would try using BHF on another browser. Lo and Behold it kept me logged in, however, I prefer to use Chrome so I uninstalled Chrome and re-installed it. Bingo, everything seems to be ok now, touch wood. I imagine it was a cookie problem. If anyone else with the same problem tries this, then make sure you save your book marks.

I've not had any unexpected log-outs lately so it seems the problem has gone away. My iPad running Chrome has been logged-in continuously for 3 weeks, and my laptop running both Chrome and Edge has stayed logged-in even though I have closed the browsers, switched off, gone away for the weekend, installed updates, run CCleaner, they now just stay logged in.
