While I was in Arica in the RAF in 1950 on the last Lancaster squadron (82PR) I met the Duke of Kent in Nairobi, he had come out to present the city with it's Royal charter and he had asked our CO if he could have a flight in a Lancaster, they chose our aircraft, I was the wireless operator and he sat by me on the main spar chatting like an ordinary person, he did say if the Palace found out he would be in it because of the safety aspect. Later the same year we were in Bo, Sierra Leone, completely desolate so off duty we would catch the ferry across the bay to the capital Freetown, as the ferry arrived a number of clerics disembarked, some African and some white, one of them chatted to me, it turned out to be Doctor Fisher the then Arch Bishop of Canterbury.
