Yardley Wood

Alepot, you areright about the look of the houses now, my auntie is in one of the council ones and she has had new windows and porch, heating and exterior renovations done, the house is lovely except for the steep stairs, they are what give away the age of the house, but my aunt manages them fine at 89,she says it's many years of practice lol!

....and what about "The Record Shop" next to bottom Flint's...bought my first 45 from there - can't remember how much it was - about 5/- I think?

I'm amazed that the Simpson's shop is still there as well.

Mrs. Flint and John used to live up on the posh end of Yardley Wood Road in Moseley near to Wake Green Road.

Also an ex-Highters Heathian - left in 1967. Anybody remember Miss Martin and Mrs. Deakin? Also Mr.Coley and Mrs Bagshaw from the Infants school?

hi speedy, i left highters heath in about 63, its all a bit foggy now though but i do remember miss martin and miss deakin the school head. i also remember mr andrews with the wooden leg and mr irving.
 
I think I left HH in '52, en route to Wheelers Lane.

There's a dent in my desk and a bruise on my chin.
It was caused by my jaw dropping when I read that "Old Man Andrews", as we called him, was still allowed to teach kids as late as '63 !

I don't want to get too controversial here but I was in his class for a term and his teaching methods were not good, to say the least.

There doesn't appear to be anything about YW, i have tried.
i do have many pictures, recent ones and would love to place them on www somehwere, but don know how and where

Hello there, I also lived in Cleeve Road from 1932 til1957, if you are on Facebook there a site B14, mainly concerned with the church.

Hiya caggyken.
I have some news regarding the Billesley Arcadians. The band was run and organised by my Grandfather Harry Bentley and my Grandmother, Ada, made all the blue and yellow uniforms. My Mother was in the band and so were her five sisters and their partners and I vauguely remember going to Shirley park to see a display. The band was ended in the mid 1950's due to my Grandfathers ill health and other pressures. Hope this is helpful to you. My mother and four of her sister are all in their 80's now and still live in the area.hope this is helpful to you

Would you remember the Drew family at all? I think they lived at 32 ...........Two girls and two boys - the youngest boy would be 77years old now if he had lived
 
Bishopsmate, I will ask my aunty when I see her next week and my cousin, aunty still lives in Cleeve Road, she is 90 in a couple of weeks.

We lived at 103 Cleeve Road on the corner of Hindhead Road.We moved there in about 1960 and my dad stayed there until he died about 15 years ago.

Hi All, on looking through this thread I noticed quite a few of you went to H H L School, which brought back a few memories. I also went there to both the Infants and Juniors, left in 1962/3 and went on to YWS. Do any of you remember Miss Jackson in Class 2 in HHL Infants approx. 1956/7. I have a Class photo of when I was there and will post when I sort it out, if any are interested in it.

Thanks, Bernie, I'll do a sort and post ASAP, working off my iPad at the moment and it doesn't allow you to run flash player. I also have a few class photos of my older brothers and sisters from YWS which may bring back a few memories for some folk. My family lived in Highters Heath Lane, and my mom lived in School Road in her youth opposite YWS. Once again many thanks.

H H L Infants Class 2 approx 1956.jpg This is Class 2 of Highters Heath Infants. Miss Jackson was the Teacher, and I can remember quite a few of the childrens' names. I'm the first one on the left, in the front row.


Class of 1957-58 YWS.jpg This is my sister's Class I think it's of the second year in YWS approx 1958-59. Miss Steer was her Teacher.


Class 2a YWS with Mr Pratt 1964-5.jpg This is my Class 2a in YWS in 1964-65, Mr. Pratt is the Teacher, don't laugh, I'm 4th in from the left on the back row.

The picture is taken in front of the Boys Gym Block, at the top of the driveway not sure who the Teacher is though, as it was still the Boys side of the School.

Hey, and by the way 'I DID IT', thanks Bernie. Also can anyone tell me what route the 64 Tram took, please?

Knew you could. I am copying this and sending it to the Lad who lived next to my first Wife to see if he recognises anyone. Lloyd may well be able to answer the question re No 64 tram but there is a site where they are listed.

This site lists a large number of routes but not 64 which it suggests may have been a 'Short' route.

The book by David Harvey, relating to Birmingham trams and their routes suggests that the 64 tram route was a short working of the 2 route from Steelhouse Lane to Erdington. It went, it seems only as far as Barnabas Road. This might be corrected but it is posted in good faith.

That could explain why it is missing from a couple of sites I checked Alan.
 
Jennie love the photos, I will ahve to ask my cousin which school she went to and what years, would guess YWS, as ythey lived in Cleeve Road, but not sure what years - her name is Judy Ainge, has an older brother, Peter.

Firstly one of the photographs with one of the miss stears on, must be a junior school picture, as there was two miss stears and they were both teachers in the senior girls school. Senior boys were on top of the junior school.

I was born in Riversdale road, still live just around the corner, but did live for a short while at 126 Cleeve rd. My sister still lives next door to where we were born. In our little enclave there are still quite a few of us original families still there. Some married boys who lived either a couple of doors away or just up the road. Also some of our children married children of our friends.
Lots of my school friends lived around Cleeve and Glastonbury road. I delivered newspapers for the newsagent opposite Haye's shop on the corner of Pendeen Road. Smithy
 
Although I did not go to school in Yardley Wood, I lived at 103 Cleeve Road from the early 60's,my father lived there until he died in the 90's .Malcolm
