I have noticed some funeral cards on ebay for a twiglet of my family. They are dated in the 1900's The earliest being 1907 and states the new Yardley Wood cemetery. The later one just states Yarldey Wood.

Ok i know there is no cemetery in Yardley Wood. Any idea if this could be Yardley, Brandwood end or Robin hood?

Jacqueline, Its in South Yardley off the Coventry Road Clay Lane is one side and from Acocks Green its off Yardley Road. I have a few of my relations buried there :)
I have a Card for Jan 1946 and it says Yardley Cemetery

Thanks for your reply Alf. I know the location of Yardley cemetery but i am just lost at the name Yardley Wood cemetery on two funeral cards some 30 years apart.

yardley wood church yard it is not a cemetery but an ordinary church yard in yardley wood nowhere near yardley I know because I live in yardley wood

Jacqueline,
Have no knowledge of a possible cemetery at todays Yardley Wood Church but on the web site for that church it states that in 1923 a extra nine acres of land was obtained for burials. So at that up that time and subsequently burials were taking place there.

hello again yes land was bought in1923 and burials are still taking place to-day most of the land has still not been cultivated for burials to take place two years ago the church was in the birmingham mail about the graves being all overgrown the vicar paid for someone to come and clear it if it was classed as a cemetery the council would clear the graves i do hope this helps

Hya Yes Mary is right YARDLEY WOOD CHURCH has a burial ground and burials are still taking place but it is not classed as a cemetry.
The graveyard is cleared as much as possible every week by volunteers from the church but it is true to say often paid work is needed. I am sure that if anyone rings or mails the church help would be forthcoming.

I have recently been to a funeral and a burial at Christ Church in Yardley Wood. The church is on or between School Road and Ravenshill Road.

On a grave stone in Yardley Wood church is the insciption of Kenneth Alan Birch, killed on active servce on April 1942 whist serving in the R.A.F. He was 22 years old.
I thought that personnel killed whilst serving their country were buried in a war grave but this one appears to be a private affair. Does anyone know the story of how this young airman lost his life.

Dave May

Hi Astonian

Living in Erdington i of course see the church regularly but have to say that nothing has gone on there for some time since the initial clean up and the church was wrapped in plastic sheeting. I realise they can't just pop down the local builders yard for material, i have looked to see if anything had been put on the notice board but nothing. I have just tried looking on a few web sites for the church and can find nothing more up to date than Sept 08, i have just found an e-mail address for their Ministry team so i might drop them a line and ask for an update
