Wymans booksellers

Remember these kiosks on station platforms selling newspapers etc ? This one was on platform 5 at Snow Hill Station in 1963. And another on platform 1 at New Street Station in 1958.

Following the business model of W. H. Smiths and the like from many years before (1840s) - providing travellers with something to read on the journey.

By 1957, a question was raised in Parliament about the control of concessions for bookshops on railway stations and possible monopolies (Source: Hansard 3/4/1957) At the time, W H Smith, Wymans and Menzies were all operating in stations, so no chance of monopoly !

I remember the Wymans sign but never realised they were booksellers. Don't think I ever bought from them.
