WW1 Street Memorials & Rolls of Honour

Hi Netti

Spoke to my mom. She does not remember the name of Arthur or Ada Harris. However, after telling her the names commemorated on the memorial she remembers some of the families who lost their loved ones from Talfourd Street.

Terry

Wendy

the people we are looking for are Ada and Arthur Harris. Ada originally married George Nutt who died and is on the memorial but her maiden name was Yates - just noticed you have Yates in your list...

Thanks Terry

I wonder what happened to the memorial? Does your mum remember which house it was on? I looked on google maps and it all looks quite new - guess they demolished the original houses?

For those who want to see the names....

Telford_Memorial_Names.jpg

Netti thank you for re posting so the names can be seen. My grandmother was Clarissa Yates I must admit I haven't researched her wider family mind you Yates is a very common name around Birmingham.

Having visited Charles and John Witsey's graves in France. I find seeing their names from a picture probably taken in the 1920's fascinating.

The houses in Talfourd Street were demolished in the late 1930's. My nan and the rest of the family moved to Lea Village around 1938/9

Thanks Netti for the time you have taken in all your replies and adding the pictures

Regards

Terry

I first started this topic when I placed a picture of the Greenway Street Roll of Honour. However, since the forum was hacked the pictures of the memorial have now vanished. I was going to upload them again, but having looked at the new demonstration tutorial of how to upload images I am afraid to say I have not got a clue what to do!!!

Terry

Terry, I have sent you a message with information on how to get started. You'll soon be posting :)

Great photo Terry, and good to see it in context with its surroundings. Is this the one that has been saved and put in Morrisons?

Thanks Terry. What a smashing photo it's sad the memorials have gone but nice we have photo's to look at. It would be nice to see some more. It would be nice to have a thread on the memorial plaques from Birmingham that were and are in factories, clubs, churches etc.

Well Done Terry !! Even sharper pictures than the ones that were hacked...how I wish that I had taken notice of this memorial when I lived in Greenway street, especially as I now know that my Charles Minchin is mentioned on it.

Margaret.

well done terry its lovely to see those pics however sad...

thank you so much for reposting them..the more we can get back onto the forum the better..

"Turner Bert Unable to locate information"

Started out to think perhaps Bert is short for Albert. Found an Albert Edward Turner, birth place Swindon, residence, Small Heath. Died 3rd March 1915, KIA Western European Theater of War. Enlisted in Bham. Regiment, KRRC 4th Battalion, reg no. 11249 - CWCG: Grave?Memorial Reference: Panel 51 and 53 YPRES (MENIN GATE)

To further establish if Bert is the above Albert.
1911 has Albert (B1898 Swindon), parents and siblings living at 101 Carlton Rd, Aston. In 1912 there is a Charles Turner listed with 2 addresses: 101 Carlton Rd and 13 Talfourd St. By 1918 the absence voter electoral roll shows 2 of Albert's brothers living at 13 Talfourd Street. Not conclusive but if perhaps we could see Bert's other details a bit closer on the Talfourd St Memorial we might be able to link him to the above.

Just been lucky enough to find Albert Edward Turner's service records. They confirm the parents and siblings from the 1911 and the address for him is 13 Talfourd Street, Small Heath. He enlisted in KRRC 6 Oct 1913 aged 18 and 10 months, He was a Carter by trade.

I have started to research the names, but you have beaten me to it. What is the name on the last plaque, right hand side on the bottom. Is it Homans?

Thanks for what you have done.

I plan to make a copy of the central section of the memorial. As you know the Witsey's were my Great Uncles and Gibbons was my Nan's first husband.
