Hello - Happy New Year to you all!!

I wonder if my Birmingham friends will be able to add any further information to the death of my Grandads brother in 1948?

His death certificate states he died on 29.09.1948 at 77 Dudley Road age 20 years.

His given address was 52 Duddeston Mill Road and that he was a Motor Lorry driver.

The cause of death was Unaemia, left ventrication heart failure and subacute neptritis.

The death was registered on 30.09.1948 by his father Ernest Wright, also of 52 Duddeston Mill Road, and the certificate states in the sub-district of Colmore.

My grandad always said the death was suspicious (?) Would there have been anything in the local paper at that time? Does anyone have access to those sort of records to have a look for me? My mum wondered if he had been in a fight? Also who was living at 77 Dudley Road? He was so young, it has always been a bit of a mystery? Can someone alsow please tell me who else was living at 52 Duddeston Mill Road at the same time? Do you have any members who may even remember the family?

Hope someone can help? Many thanks

Hello and Happy New Year to you too!
I think 77 Dudley Rd is Dudley Rd. Hospital, which is now called the City Hospital.
Others on the Forum will be able to help with the rest of the query!!!
Rosie.

rosie is correct in saying 77 dudley rd. is the hospital

in 1945 at 52 duddeston mill road was alice m. wright
in 1950 same address - alice m. wright, ernest wright, leonard e. overton and hilda e. overton

only persons over the age of 21 would be on the electoral rolls though

Perhaps your grandad may have got hold of the wrong idea.
Today it would be called Cardio-renal Anaemia Syndrome.
It is a disease which is a cycle of Heart failure, kidney insufficiency and Anaemia,
young adults can suffer from it.

Re: Christopher Wright Deceased 29.09.1948 aged 20

Thanks all for the info! I had assumed 77 Dudley road was a residence and wouldn't have crossed my mind that it was the hospital!

Duddeston Mill Road looks to be extremely close to a railway station on todays Google street view - presume it is/was Duddeston station. My limited knowlege is that it was bombed in the war, was rebuilt and then caught fire. Both sets of Great-grandparents worked for the Railway - not sure which station though. In 1925 Ernest Wright is recorded as being a Railway Carriage Painter. In 1943 on my nan and grandads marriage certificate he is recorded as being a Munition Worker, but my other Great Grandfather Arthur Joseph Banham is recorded as beong a Railway worker.

Does anyone know if there are Railway records that might detail their work history?

And can anyone help with how I would find out if/where Christopher Wright was buried?

Re: Christopher Wright Deceased 29.09.1948 aged 20

In early days this station was known as Vauxhall and Duddeston at the bottom of Duddeston Mill Rd we had Saltley Railway Sheds most of the men would have been employed here. The munition workers would have been at the Metropoltan Camel during the war years they later returned to railway carriage builders.Dek

It is likely that the Railway Carriage Painter was at the Metro Cammell as well, they built carriages and wagons for all over the world there.

Hi All - I've recently been told through these forum pages, by 'Astonian' that he remembers my Grandad's younger brother Christopher and that they were at school together! It was Steward Street School, Ladywood. Astonian remembers that everyone knew him (slim fair hair lad, intelligent and keen on writing poems) as the family had a laundry business - they started off taking washing in and later they introduced the dry cleaning business - memories include: steam coming out of the side windows at the side of the house for years; water trough for horses; there was the Hopings family who lived in behind them in the terrace along with the Chatwin family; one of Hopings was Barry Hopkings (he joined the army.) I just thought I'd add this extra information on the off chance that someone else might be searching for any of these key words, and it would be wonderful to hear from anyone else who would remember him? He would be approx 84 if he were still alive today.

Duddeston Station is at the top of the Duddeston Mill Road, and is next to the carriage and wagon works (now closed). It is possible he worked there.
