Woolley Henry / Emma Tew

Summer

Brummie babby
Hi team

I desperately need help I have been looking for the marriage certificate of my great grandparents Henry woolley Emma Tew

Henry was born around 1855
Emma was born around 1857
in the 1911 census it states they had been married about 37 years.

A very nice man called John who works at the Birmingham registry office has carried out a search a five year search either side of 1875 and with no Luck. without this I am stuck.
It is a project I started for my Dads 80th Birthday.

Any help would be appreciated.
:fat::stupid:

There is a marriage of a Henry Woolley in 1875 Kings Norton.
The FRee BMD is not complete so Emma could have been left off.
In 1875 Kings Norton was in Worcestershire.
Your best bet would be to request certificate from General Register Office , they will search all counties 3 years either side 1875.
You can request online at www.gro.gov.uk
Request that it must be both Henry Woolley/Emma Tew to save having to pay for incorrect certificate.

Thank Alberta

Did you manage to see what the quarter was and reference. I'm off to work now and will not be home be back till 6.30 :culpability: I would much prefer staying home and working on my family tree.

Kind regards Wendy

on findmypast the marriage alberta mentions is for henry woolley - but could be to emily hill or kate smith unfortunately.

Did Emma have any other names?

I had a school medal for an Annie Tew which I passed on last year.

Hi Dwilly this is what I have so far

1901 census
78 Moseley St
Henry Wooley M 46
Emma Wooley F 44
Florance wooley 19
Sarah Wooley F 17
Lilly Wooley F 15
Mary Wooley F 13
Elizabeth Wooley 10
Harry Wooley M 06
Nellie Wooley F 02
George Davis M 66
Rebecca Williams F 41
Harry Williams M 11

1911

22 Vaughton St

Henry Woolley 56
Emma Woolley 54
Lily 24
Elizabeth Woolley 20
Harry Woolley 17
Ellen Woolley 12

I assume they are all the same family including the 1881 census not sure why the change of spelling in the 1901 census though. And with all this I can not find there marriage certificate.
1911 census is where he stayed until his death in 1920 which was witnessed by his daughter Florence he died before my dad was born and my dad has only just found out he had 12 aunts and uncles he never knew any of them. Hope this all makes sense
Kindest regards Wendy

How strange

one of her daughters was a Mary Ann but surname Woolley she may have been named after her Aunt

spellings were often down to the enumerator so its sometimes how they heard things or how they thought things were spelt, I don't think it was like recent censuses in them days where you filled the form in yourself then someone knocked on the door and recorded the details.

Maybe they never married or did she marry someone before who died and married in her married name?

The enumerators who collected and recorded the details in the 1800's often made errors and also, because of the poor writing, some names get mis-transcribed from the original record, easy to see why in a lot of cases!
I know the problem with the marriage, having the same problem with my great grandmother, we know she married a James Harrison, then James Griffiths, have the Griffiths marriage but cannot find the Harrison one, even used the GRO as Shera suggests and they cannot find a marriage that fits all the criteria, so am now assuming that they did not marry at all, just classed themselves as married! As they were living apart on every census, that is a possibility.
Hope you have more luck,
Sue
