Woodyatt's burial place

Helen G

Almost a Brummie
I am coming up to Brum at the beginning of November and as it will be All Souls Day I thought it would be only fitting to visit some of my ancestors graves. I visit ancestors graves in Studley a couple of times a year (see some of my posts elsewhere on this site) and try to tend them as best I can and leave flowers.

This time I plan to visit again the grave of my Porter's branch, 6 of which are in the same grave in Lodge Hill but I also want to find the resting place of the Wodyatt's. In particular Thomas Woodyatt who died 17 dec 1916, Susan Woodyatt who died 1/4Q 1936 and their daughter Elsie May Woodyatt who died 3/4Q 1912 aged 15years.

Wendy has, in the past, had a look in Key Hill for me but couldn't find Thomas. Thomas owned a factory in Bishop Street which may give a clue to burial site and I am in the process of ordering all three death certificates, this will not tell me where buried but may give me a clue to where they were living when they died whioch may also provide a clue for burial.

Unfortunately, my time in Brum will have to be brief this visit. I will only get about 1 1/2 days to do all the research I want to before visiting the graves I can identify and returning home. I also want to do some research on whether Susan Woodyatt was a suffragette or not.

So I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction as to which cemetry I should be targeting for my research and where I might find the records.

many thanks for reading this

Hi

from the bham electoral rolls.
1920 - 25/27 Bishop Street, St Martin's & Deritend ward
Susan, Thomas, Harry, Edward & James Woodyatt
1925 - Susan, Harry & Edward Woodyatt at Bishop Street
1930 - Susan, Harry, Harry, Thomas & Ethel Woodyatt at Bishop St
1935 - Susan, Harry, Harry, Thomas & Ethel Woodyatt at Bishop St.

In 1930 & 1935 Thomas Woodyatt (as well as living at Bishop St) has under 'Abode, other information' 10 Newman Rd, Erdington Nth & 28 Kilmorie Rd, Acocks Green respectively.

Thanks for that. The Thomas you have found was the eldest son of Thomas and Susan Woodyatt. Susan's husband Thomas definately died in 1916...I've seen the will and probate.

What I need is a lead as to where Susan and her husband were buried. If Susan's son Thomas had her buried near his home in Acocks Green, for example, which is the nearest cemetery? Alternatively if she and her husband were buried near Bishop Street which cemetery would that be?

Helen have you tried contacting Witton Cemetery. If you give them the name and death date they may look for one person for you!:)

No I haven't tried Witton yet 'cos I wanted to get an idea first as to which cemetery was the most likely in relation to where they were living at the time. I am hoping that Thomas and susan were buried in the same grave and with a bit of luck their daughter Elsie may will be in the same plot. Thats what happened with my Porter branch.

I'll try a email to Witton now.

Thanks Wendy.

Yardley cemetary is the nearest to Acocks Green. There are a number of Churches the largest grave yard being ST Margerates Warwick rd Acocks Green.

Hmmmmm but Bishop Street is more Deritend or Digbeth than Acocks Green. Do you think they would have gone that far? And would they have buried Susan in the same grave as Thomas, seems a shame to part them in death.

The dates you mention were after the graveyareds were closed. The only graveyard burials would have been in family plots already purchased. I would start with Witton if no luck try other cemeteries. Some people get a little confused between graveyards and cemeteries. When the graveyards were closed all burials were in cemeteries appart from family graves.:)
