I'm a newcomer to this site and am trying to trace my ancestor William Wright born about 1780/1790. Among my earlier notes I recorded a William at the above address but have been unable to find it since. He would have been either a blacksmith or gunmaker of some description. Can anyone help please?

Welcome Henry to the best forum going you live in the same area as our old diplomat Alf and also Maggs

There is this William Wright on the 1841 census, not the right DOB though.

henry8wright welcome to the site.:)
In 1841 there are a number of Wright families in the area of Woodcock St however there are not many members named William. So apart from the one Nick has posted the only other that comes close in age is this one living in Coleman St, which was until the 1960's only just a short walk away from Woodcock St

Thanks for the info. Age for the son William is right so is the occupation but wife's name not although sometimes you get Mary Ann! Haven't yet been able to find this family on the 1841 Census. Any further clues would be appreciated.

The message I posted on Pogmolian was meant for you. Sorry! I'm still getting used to this site.

This looks like the son William b.1813 but all later sources show the child b.1840 as being born Whitechapel for which I have sources. Just a coincidence I suppose. Thanks anyway.

This was the only thread that came up in a Woodcock Street title search, so I will append this request here. Requesting any old pictures of Woodcock Street pre-1930 please, if possible including numbers 41, 47 and any of Court 5.

Maurice

Maurice,

I'm pretty sure there are other threads on the forum relating to Woodcock Street as are these photos, I don't think that they date as far back as 1930, well not all of them.

Hi Phil,

Thanks very much for those and I've certainly seen the two of Court 16 before. As I say, I only did a title search in the hope that that was where the majority of the pics would be, but not so, there were none in that thread. Looks like I'm going to have to trawl through all the threads with a mention of the street.

Maurice

Number 41 or 47, Phil, as I would imagine most of the courts are alike - and there are a lot of them. I have waded through ten pages of search results and the bulk of those are about the baths. My LONGMOREs occupied them for many years in the 19th century, but with photography in its infancy then, any photographs are likely to be quite a bit later, which was why I said preferably pre-1930.
