Am I right in thinking that a pram used to be a common sight outside shops in those days ?
I believe so. There wasn't the room inside the local shops for a pram, the customers and the shopkeepers to serve inside, so prams did tend to be left on or near the shop front for a minute or two. Both shopkeepers and mother would keep an eye on the baby's pram (which was often under the watchful eye of a brother or sister as well), but to be honest 40+ years ago, it seemed safe enough, to do this, without too much worry.
