Till 1937 I lived in Perry Common Rd opposite Buxton Rd and our garden backed onto the allotments which in turn backed on to Witton Lakes. After a spell living in Kingstanding we moved to Abingdon Rd in 1939. I was still in Hastings Rd Infants when just at the start of the war a rumour went round the school that bayonets were hidden in the sandpits at the edge of the Lakes. The next thing was hoards of us racing round there hoping to find them til chased off by a watchman. I remember the rowing boats and learning to row with my dad but when the war started it all finished.
All during the war there were some tree logs stored at the side of the boathouse and when we had the big bonfire at the top end of Abingdon Rd for VE Day ( the bottom end had their own) the park keeper let us have one for the fire, it took about 8 of us to carry it.
