my old house was a 3 bedroomed victiorian house with a coal bunker outside loo and no bathroom
i lived oposit handsworth new rd secondary school and bishop latimars church was at the end of the road
we were between markby rd and preston rd
if you came out of our house and walked up towards the prison there was a newsagents on the corner of preston rd and a bit futher up there was a green groucers come shop owned by a irish family
my best friend at the time used to live at the bottom of foundry rd and perrott rd in a old cottage type house that backed on to the railway line

Astonian: I don't know Matt Chambers... I just came across his Flickr page when I was looking for old photos of Brum.
Was the cafe you mentioned, up near Bryant Street?
As kids we used to go up the entry between the houses in Bryant Street and get over the wall and onto the railway track.
Up that entry was always called 'The Dry House', I never knew why!

The only shops I can remember on Winson Green Road were:
Biggs greengrocers - down near Wellington Street.
Tong Kee - Chinese Takeaway/chip shop - were there many of those in the early/mid sixties?
Dykes bicycle shop,
Crowders (a sweet shop as I remember),
Blowers newsagents a bit further up towards Summerfield Park on the other side of the road.
A friends father also ran a grocery (I think!) shop on the corner of Winson Green Road and Magdala Street. Possibly called Slaters - would have been opposite The Smiths Arms.

Another memory is of my mum running out of the back yard to go to the shops and bumping into Alfred Burke...he was filming a scene for 'Public Eye'
She always said that she quite fancied him and I remember her coming back in all of a fluster! :D

if i remember rightly
if you walked up preston rd right to the end turned right there used to be a row of shops a laundrett and a ladies clothes shop both owned by the same people and i think a small newsagents
anyway if you stood infront of the shops and looked right you could see all saints hospital and the prison that was during the 70's
dont know if the shops are still there now

on the corner of handsworth new rd and preston rd there was a corner shop owned by a lady called dosris she had i think a black scottish terrior called mack who used to stand behind the counter and bark at you

half way up markby rd was another news agents owned by a lady called beatie my dad used to send me and my sister there for half ounce of old holborn and a box of marches

both these shop owners have long since gone not sure if the shops are still standing

My father was born in Willis Road, Winson Green. He went to Handsworth New Road School between 1915 and 1924. He attended Bishop Latimer Church and sang in the church choir. I was born in Vicarage Road Handsworth in 1943 and remember walking down to Willis Road to see my nan until she died in 1956 in All Saints Hospital. My gt aunt lived in Dora Road Handsworth. I have been researching my family and find that one of my ancestors lived in Willis Road in the 1891 census. I went along Willis Road about ten years ago and found the house where my dad lived, was still there and looking quite good - amazing these days when all things old have been demolished to make way for "progress" ........

My Aunt lived at number 6 Dora Road for more than 60 years, and my grandparents lived round the corner at 16 Mary Road. The houses still look the same as they did when I was a child except for the colours.

hi all
my mate john corefield lived was born and lived untill 3/4 yrs in winson green don't know where though born in 1948, he tells me that his gt GF was an executioner for the state , and had lived in winson green for generations.

Hi nodrogv,
I don't remember which number my aunt lived at in Dora Road. She lived there from 1914 when she married until she died in 1967.It's nice to know the houses are still there, it's part of our heritage and it's nice to go and see where our family have lived. I shall have to go and have a look around the area sometime.............Pam

ANNIE
The tropicani pet shop was half way own the winson green rd about eight dors from the smiths arms or as it was known then
the old smithy pub
with the black smith anvil just sitting at the end of the bar behind the door as yu entered the bar room
and it was either next door to the old butchers or a couple of doors away from it

Am I right in thinking All Saints prison is now Winson Green. I found a man in the prison in the 1901 census. Unfortunately the Birmingham Post on line on the Birmingham library website finishes in September 1900. Is there anywhere else I can find out what Henry Biddle did to be a prisoner?

Birmingham ancestors: Bracey, Tibbins, Horton, Hollingsworth, Lyons, Baker, and many more

I was a little confused when I looked at the 1901 census return for the prison. It did not call it Winson Green Prison, just had the parish, All Saints at the top of the page and the enumarators page.
