Winson Green chip shop

Winson Green

New Member
Hello all,

I'm new to this great history forum. We lived at 42 Tudor Street Winson Green from about 1967 to 1971. I was wondering if anyone might recall the chip shop that stood on the corner of Tudor Street and Chiswell Road? An old lady ran it, I think her name may have been Mrs Sherwood.
Fish & Chips were a regular Friday night meal for us (like many I guess). I remember that Mrs Sherwood did not use a machine to cut the potatoes but used a hand operated machine like a press to make them.

all the best

Hi
I remember the chip shop on the corner very well. You would be standing in the shop and she would count how many wanted chips and then would put them under that hand press. Also the corner shop which was run by Terry started selling faggots, if you took your own bowel to put them in.

all the best

Thanks for replies Astonian and stars,
I was down that way yesterday (I live Halesowen way now) and showed my missus a bit of the area. All too depressing. But very happy memories. We lived right opposite the Malt Shovel but Dad seemed to prefer the Albion. Any idea when those properties were finally demolished? I don't suppose there are any pictures of Tudor Street on this site are there?

hi there my god you mentioned as we used to call her scaabby aggies as she was a little mean with her chips ha ha but the were the best tasting chips ever the properties you speak of were regrenarated and demolition took place from the late 70s early 802 my family lived on tudor street at the bottom

Hi-I never actually visited Tropicana but my late partner, Mike Corbett ran it in the mid 60's. He used to tell me all about it. I have a photo of him in the pet shop flat when he'd just got married to Christine Hall, but no photos of the shop itself.
In the early eighties I worked as a community worker at the old Summerfield school-it was a community centre by then.
So you live there still? Would love to hear about your memories! I lived in Summerfield Crescent when I worked there.
Take care!
