Hi

I think I have found the Cinema refered to in Toms
Card of 1916.
It would appear to be the Grand.
Attached 1930's listing.
After the War with a number of others it
disappeared thanks Adolf.

Thanks Mike. I am not sure about the 'picture house' as the card says Washwood Heath Road and the listing says Alum Rock?

The only picture house I can find on Washwood Heath Road was The Heath ,which was opened c1915 (9 years after date of card)and closed in 1941 due to bomb damage.

Hi

Jim Perkins on his Website mentions the Heath.
The Picture on there appears to be the the Capital
now closed down.

Mike

As you probably know, the Capitol was on Alum Rock Rd, next to the railway bridge and just up from the Pelham Arms. Maybe I can check Kellys ?

Roger.

If the Heath opened in 1915, that could be correct as the card is dated 1916 not 1906 as I first thought. Do we know where it was on Washwood Heath Rd?

Roger.

Hi

Another one is the Picture house the Rock.
clearly Kelly's will help.
Ill try to locate the Photographers?

Mike

The cinema building is still there. Corner of Washwood Heath Road and Bennets Road but it is now DHILLON cash and carry. View the following links. Funny, I must have past that place a million times in another lifetime. Never noticed it. Old pal of mine David Parks lived just down Bennets Road.

I Don't know if this helps but I just asked my husband if there were any old picture houses down washwood heath road and he said there was an old one it is now a warehouse, it may be the right one.

Kelly's 1949 shows a Isaac Squires at 224 Washward Heath Road, thats a long time after the card date (33 years) but possible they remained at the same address for that amount of time

Colin

I had completely forgotten that place, also having been past it countless times. Certainly is in the right spot -other family and friends lived in Hutton Rd. Looking at Jim's website I was surprised to see a picture of his uncle, John Shakespeare, who was an old teacher (and enemy) of mine at Saltley Grammar - I was one of the sports and PE hating kids that he despised...

Roger.

Caldicott family

Hi Thestudy2, The 1881 census has your Caldicot family living in Northfield, but Hubert road is actually between Selly park and Bournbrook, a much more up market area. It probably was a very rural area in 1881

Mike - I just remembered a pair of WW1 medals I have - they are inscribed:

200559 S.SGT R.T.Caldicott Tank Corps. I don't know if that matches the cap badge on the photo?

Floss Wilson married George Simmons - I also have his WW1 medals.

Maybe a moderator could move this thread to the correct place, I don't want to get shouted at when I've only just joined... or perhaps I could just add a couple of maps to each post?

I am researching for Peterborough and the Great War, this man signed a Visitors Book at Peterborough East Railway Station and would really like to get hold of the pictures mentioned in this post and contact 'thestudy2' but given this was in 2007 it might be difficult. Can anyone help further? https://www.peterboroughww1.co.uk/

Hi, I am 'thestudy2' now with the username Bosworth. It's a bit late, only six years or so, but I have sent my contact details via your website.
