many thanks mike..off the top of my head i coulndnt recall a red lion...was william guest landlord of the white lion or the briish lion in 41???...im helping a member so i will get back to her...

lyn...

William Guest was the British Lion. The White Lion was Henry Yates. This was the1940 directory. The 1943 directory gave White Lion as Leonard William Young, and British lion still as William Guest. therefore the British lion would have been Guest in 1941, but can't be certain of the White lion in that year.

The British Lion was in Newtown Row, next door to Newtown Garage, then the Market Hall, then the Post Office on the corner of Asylum Road, there has been a thread about this a couple of times and I am sure there is a photo on the site somewhere.

Mike

well lynne at least we have him at the british lion pub...of course as we dont know the exact year he may have been at the green man it does not mean to say he was not there....

lyn

how i agree about the clever people on this forum.
just a few hours ago i thought my great uncle had been the landlord of the red lion in newtown row,now thanks to lyn and mike
i know he was at the british lion, how long he was there and a photo of the pub to boot, how great is that.
many thanks.
lynne

glad to help lynne..and if you could find out what year he was surposed to be at the green man maybe it would be possible to check it out again with a specific year...just in case he was there here is a pic of the pub in question...

lyn

hi lyn. thanks for the pic of the pub,ill ask my sister if she has got any info about the green man,
but she was the one who told me about the red lion so its not looking too good.

thanks again.
lynne

lynne..at least your sister got the lion part right:D so glad it wasnt the white lion further up the road as it looks such a scary place..like something out of a dracula film... thats just my opinion though...

Hi Lynne,from the Electoral Rolls
1925 and 1930
The Green Man, 140/141 Summer Lane
William Guest and Helena Harriet Guest.

In 1950 at the British Lion together with Reginald Guest.
(Births Sep 1923 Ronald W Guest mmn Tibbins Birmingham vol 6d page 478 )
They had moved to 133 Arden Road,Handsworth by 1955.

Hi Lynne, this is just me being curious, but is it just coincidence that in 1950,Ronald W Guest was living with a Joan K Guest at 3 back of 140 Alma Street,
and at 140 Alma Street was William,Hilda,Jean and Harold Tibbins?
(Tibbins being Helena's maiden name?)

In the 1955 and 1956 Kellys he is listed at 133 Arden road as a grocer, but has gone by 1962 (still a grocers, but under a different name)
Mike

this is brillient:) at this rate lynne you will soon have a full family history:)i cant be posative but somewhere in my loose photos i have a copy of a pic of two of the pubs in summer lane taken round about the time william guest would have been at the green man..i know the one is of the stag but cant remember what the other pub is...i shall have a look later on and if its the green man you are very welcome to have the photo...

thanks again to mike and lady lynne....:)

With the name of John Shaw on the window,I would guess it would be the previous landlord whose partner was Eliza. (Electoral Rolls 1920 and 1922)

hi all,
wow what can i say, you will have to give me time to take all this in.
all i really knew before was that helena had been married before to someone named cooper.
thanks a million for all the info and photos im going to study it all now.

lynne.

This is the photo that started all this. Its William,Helena and Reginald Guest outside the back of the BRITISH lion pub newtown row.

Hi Lynne,I think Helena was a Cooper before she married a Tibbins!
Marriages Jun 1912
Helena H Cooper married Ernest Tibbins Birmingham vol 6d page 78
Marriages Mar 1923
William Guest married Helena H Tibbins Birmingham vol 6d page 352
Marriages Mar 1945
Ronald W Guest married Joan K Jay Birmingham vol 6d page 373

The father of Ernest Tibbins was Walter,a Brass Dresser, who, interestingly, had become the manager of The White Swan in Warwick Street, with his second wife Elizabeth,in the 1911 census.
Hope this helps!
