hi all. i would appreciate a bit of expert help on this one. can anyone suggest as to why someone who lived in nechells/aston would travel all the way to sorento hospital to give birth to her child. this was in 1953 and i am sure there were other hospitals a lot closer and a lot were home births. also if it is possable where would one start to gain access to birth records from sorento for this year. i already know a lot all i would like to find out is the age of the mother and the address given by her when she had her child. many thanks if you can advise on this. wales.:)
 
The only reason I can think of is capacity. My mother lived but a 2 miles from Sorrento but had me at Loveday Street!
 
I guess there were loads of us on this forum born in Loveday Street. I know I was for one :) My Mom and Dad lived in Derrydown Road, Perry Barr at the time - as far as I know, but I may be wrong!! But that is where I went back to as a baby. It would be interesting to know how many of us are Loveday Street babies!
 
always thought that Sorento was a specialist maternity hospital that dealt with premature babies, I think I read somewhere that the babies born there were known as "Sugar bag babies"
 
Postie's right, many complicated and early birth's took place there. My sister was born there and was luck to survive, they had to put her in Dolls cloths as she was so small and under weight. It would be like being born and put in the equivalent of 'The NeoNatal Unit' today.

hi wales, if you type in sorrento nursing home.
my story is there perhaps other people have a similar one,
maybe. we know our story was the best outcome one could wish,

thank you all for the advise. i am in touch with someone who was born there in 1953 and put up for adoption at birth. we are convinced that he is the son of my dads auntie. whiile he is waiting for social services to release more info(which could take a while yet) it would help us greatly if we could find out the age she was and the address given at the time of her giving birth then we could see if it ties up with the info i have on dads auntie.(who died over 20 years ago) she never married so a marr cert is not possable. all the evidence does point to them being one and the same but it would be so nice to tie things up like he can adjust to having a very large extended family and confirm his roots thats why i was asking if it is possable to obtain the records from sorento hospital from 1953. i would be grateful if anyone can direct me on this. many thanks again. wales.:)

i did look at the time of the start of this thread at NHS stuff but never kept it :( for obvious reasons i,m sure you,ll get there happy days regards dereklcg.
 
hi wales just typed in on Firefox/google sorrento maternity hospital and it has come up
the national archives so it,s there tells you about sorrento.

hi all. just thought i would let you all know that social services have now confirmed that the child lucy harrington gave up for adopotion in 1953 is indeed the son of my dads auntie. i am so pleased for him as he has now found a very large extended family. we still cant find out exactly where lucy was cremated that will be our next mission. thank you all for you help and advise

hello everyone desperate to find long lost brother possible other brother or sister all adopted edwin john harrington dob 19.1.1943 and other 1948 anyone with info please reply at send_us@live.com mother lucy harrington born 1914 last heard brother in chester either possibly doesnt know about keith harrington just found out from social services my history in need of help too much red tape keith harrington torbay
