Why revert back to maiden name on Census?.

brumgum

Proud to be a Brummie!
My Gt Gran seems to have reverted back to her maiden name after becoming a widow on the 1901 census, any ideas why anyone would do this?. She was living with her daughter and son in law at the time.

I know a few people in modern times who have done this. It can be I would have thought be for various reason.

Hi Brumgum,
It could also be that your gr gran was never actually married to her husband, as was the case for my gr gr gran.
On the 1911 census she was noted with her first husbands name - then crossed out and the current husbands name filled in!!!

Or maybe that he was a baddie and she no longer wished to be associated with his name.

I have a friend who was in the opposite position, her husband was a goodie, quite a famous TV personality who died young, she is a writer and wanted to be known on her own merit not because of who she was married to, so uses her maiden name.

There must be many many reasons. E.

Thanks for these replys, i was wondering if perhaps at that time in history it might have been to their advantage to do something like that.
