Thank you Terry, much appreciated. Can you give me the link to the history site for WW1 please, I have seen it on here before but can't remember what its called.

barrie.

Thank you Terry and Lloyd.

Terry I have tried to register with the site you gave, but am having problems. I cannot receive a confirmation e-mail, I have contacted them (by e-mail) and they have replied to me on the same e-mail address. They have told me that the problem probably lies with my spam filters (whatever they are)

The site has allowed me to log-in using the details I gave them, it says I am logged in, but wont allow me to post any threads. I think I'll give up, I've never had this problem with any other site.

It is not totally obvious. When logged into the Great War Forum the list of topics appears. A 'thread' must be started under one of these. Click 'Soldiers' and look top-rightish for 'New Topic'. Click and you are away. Use a heading and a sub-heading - with regiment. Names only do not attract as many hits.

Alan,
With some sites although you can log in, your "account" has to be activated before you can post messages, usually they send you an email when this has been done.

I've tried that Alan, but even though I have had an e-mail from them to say I have been accepted and can now post on the site, when I try to do so, I am told I cannot start threads.

II have found out now (from the Great War site) that shortly after 8 OBLI arrived in France, they were moved on to Macedonia of all places. I was also told that one of the battalion members had written a book of his experiences, the book is called "Muckydonia"

I have found a copy on Amazon, so I might send for it.

Up date on "Muckydonia" by William D Mather. I contacted Amazon Books and have ordered the book. I'm risking £28 here, just on the off chance there might be some pictures in the book with my Grandad on them, but hey', its only money. :)

Barrie,I am sure the book will be great. Even if there are no photo's it will give you a wonderful insight into what your grandfather went through. I have not long ago read a book given to me entitled Old Contemptible published in 1967 written by Harry Beaumont who escaped from a German prison camp. The story was amazing and the people he encountered a real insight into this terrible war!
