My great aunt seemingly lived and taught for years in Erdington, at a Catholic school. She died Dec 1971 at what was the East Birmingham Hospital, Little Bromwich, B9. The woman who registered her death "causing the body to be buried" (does that mean she was an undertaker? nurse? friend?) was from Lichfield Rd, Coleshill. Where is she likely to be buried? I want to do a cemetery search but am not sure which one to start with. She (Mary Theresa "Molly" Hyland, b. Cork, Ire) had no family. I am coming to Birmingham in September and would love to be able to visit her grave and history. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Isn't Woodlands cemetary near Coleshill?
Macca

Hi Macca,

It certainly is, on the Birmingham to Coleshill Road, just next to the Coleshill side of the M6 Motorway.

Only thing is, - it wasn't opened until 1983!

Kind regards

Dave

There is a cemetry next to Oscott College in Erdington on the Chester Rd, I think. Is that Witton or Oscott cemetry?

Frances have you any more details.. where did she live before going into hospital ? she may have made her own arrangements ie a will ?.. to be buried in her local cemetery ..most people were usually buried in the parish they lived in :

Thanks for all your suggestions -much appreciated at the other side of the globe! I'll start at Witton, and will pursue the will. Thanks again to you all.

Hi again,
Almost run out of cemeteries now and still no sign. Can't get over how helpful everyone has been though!
I've applied for the will and also hospital records.
How quickly we disappear.
Thanks again.

Have you tried Witton Cemetery? people were not always buried in their local cemetery or church yard.

Thanks Wendy and Alf. I started with Witton and the only cemetary I have left to hear back from now is Lodge Hill. The hospital records have been destroyed, just heard this morning (my time.) However,I saw the ref to the Midlands Historical Data site on another thread so am going to try the Electoral Rolls now.
I feel like I'm getting to know Birmingham well from afar!
Google Earth is great, too for zipping about the place.
Thanks again.

I've found my great-aunt, through an extremely helpful staff member at King's Norton. It turns out my aunt is buried in the cemetery at Erdington Abbey, having taught at the College. Looking forward to visiting her spot in a couple of weeks.
Thanks again for all the suggestions.

there is a cemetery next to good hope hospital in sutton coldfield with a large catholic section; my father is laid to rest there, he died in erdington so i think this cemetery may cover that area. I am not sure of the name ,it may be called good hope but i am sure someone will know on this forum. good luck in your search
