Where is this? Schools #1

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
On the suggestion of GG Jean I'm reopening this old thread that I have not tried for quite a while now. For the new members who have not seen it before, the idea is that I post a photo and you try to name the building or location. The idea is not to just name the location (though it is the ultimate goal) but also to stimulate memories in the hopes that you will share them with us.

This run of photos will be all schools and will run until interest fades or I run out of photos. but don't expect the latter to occur any day soon.

Well done that man, bang on the money, King Edward VI Grammar School Camp Hill and now as has been stated Bordesley Centre. Hopefully they will get harder as we progress as we don't want them going down that fast do we? A little look at what it looks like today, it hasn't changed much has it? Look for another school tomorrow.

jean ;
the surrounding rd closeist of camp hill was stratford rd junction of camp hill and mosely rd ;
and also on the approche of camp hill would have been bradford street [top end ] coming up from digbeth and down from the old city centre bulll ring ;
you would have gone way pass coventry rd junction as it took a left hand turn onto coventry rd just as you approach the fly over
at camp hill
best wishes Astonian;;;;;

Thanks Alan. It looks so much like a school where I took a first aid course badge some years ago. Jean.

hi jean;
yes later in years they done alot of courses there in a varity of things as i seem to recall ;
there used to be a family by the name garratts just along there on the stratford rd a generationof them they had about five or six shops there
all next to each other specilizing in different things you name it they had it ; and they was straight as a die they would never buy stolen goods
and always reported the dodgy guys whom would come in and try and sell dodgy goods [ stolen ] they worked along with the police at bradford street
but also they never gave you alot in the terms of money if you was in urchent of money ;but they charged big money over the odds if you wanted to buy any thinl they sold caravan , motor bikes bric a bac you name it they had it ;
have a good day best wishes alan ; astonian;;;;

Jean

The attached map shows the distance of the school from Coventry Rd, I have marked it with a blue cross. As you can see it was only a short walk up Sandy Lane to the school from Coventry Rd.

The Boys school at KEGS moved out & the first & second years from Waverley Grammar school moved in, I was there for one year & then moved back to the Small Heath school in Waverley Rd.

When I went to St Mick's in Floodgate Street 1958 approx., we used to walk home past this building to Sparkhill and it used to be called Waverly Grammer School 1st and 2nd Year's. Some of my old mates went there. We used to spend the bus fares on penny dips where at a café in Digbeth they dunked bread crusts into a tomato sauce and drippin, marvelous taste!!

Bob there was a similar cafe close to the Waverely Road school where we got the same thing but one of the guys used to get free dinner tickets at school & sell them, he would then go to the cafe it was called Jills & buy 5 fat dips & go & eat them sitting trainspotting on the bridge by Small Heath station, he used to say that the first 3 were ok but by the 4th the fat had congealed & lost its allure for him!!!
