I suppose it could possibly be before you were born, but it's not York Rd.

Phil

Phil i,m having a lot of trouble identifying any of these garages but the car looks like a Humber Super Snipe late50s early 60s Some body has been round with a paint brush maybe the Stratford Rd. Dek

No Dek, not Stratford Rd I'm afraid. Strange it seems there was a lot of vandalism round that time. Somebody went round with a pot of white paint blanking out a lot of Garage names.

Phil

Dave,

You would have to give me more information than that, as that is not the name that I have blanked out. It could have changed hands at sometime and been renamed. So the name of the road would be a great help.

Phil

Yes Phil saw one that looked just like it yesterday on the way. Lovely place and gave us directions. Jean. PS Have a good day.

Now Jean you know I only collect photos of Birmingham. Smiler I think you must have Dolman's garage in mind. It's not that one.

Phil

Thanks just a try, it was the bend in the road that made me think it was that garage. Keep them coming it takes me back a bit!!!

Since I obviously can't use it now, as you would get it straight away. I thought you might like to see it anyway. This is Dollman's Garage at the junction of Winson Green Rd, Handsworth New Rd & lodge Rd.

Worth seeing the Notwen sign again Phil, it was Newton Oils Holt Street I worked for them when I was 16 as a lorry drivers mate

My parents next door neighbour (Mr Wheeler) worked as a salesman for them Alf.

Hi Phil, from memory Checpoint was almost opposite Dolmans Garage on Lodge rd?? That's as good as I can remember.

Hi Dave

Thats not the one then, but obviously you now know it is somewhere in Handsworth.

As it is called the Crompton Garage and it is in Crompton Rd, I would say that it's a very good chance. Very Well done you.

Thanks Phil, I must say this one has had me going for the last few days, it was the over looking window in the end of the building next door that was the bit I remembered seeing. Here it is in it's modern day form, I think it was the white paint job on the front of the building that made this one hard to get, I had to look sevaral time at the modern day picture to make sure it was the right location.

It has not changed that much at all, a nice thing to see these days. I would love to have a house like that, just drive the car into the front room and give it a quick service whilst watching the telly. I wonder if you would get planning permission these days to n your house into a garage, it certainly looks like this place was once a residential property that was converted for commercial use. Come to think of it, there were once loads of small business's run from converted residential properties, a thing of the past I am sorry to say, now it is all industrial units, a long way from the small, friendly local business at the end of the street. There must have been many scattered about, if you look carefully when out and about traces of these small concerns are still evident from faded advertisements painted on walls.

I think you if you did a survey you might be surprised just how many businesses started from somebody's house, garage or back garden shed. Small commercial units were not so plentiful back then. Just look at the jewellery quarter most of those businesses were started in what was once someones front room. I myself in my younger days worked in many industrial premises and concerns that were once living accommodation.

Well blow me down, if im not looking through here and see the name Joesbury! Thats my name!

You later solved it but it isnt Checkpoint, which is unfortunately now gone.

Loving this site!

From memory Checkpoint was owned by two brothers and another brother worked at PJ Evans in town - the names Barry and Briam are vaguely recalled. Are you related?
